Recognizing the First Honorees of the Phil Kaufman Hall of Fame

July 16th, 2021 by Bob Smith, Executive Director

Here’s a closer look at the first honorees –– Jim Hogan and Edward J. McCluskey –– of the first Phil Kaufman Award for Distinguished Contributions to Electronic System Design than my earlier post.

Jim Hogan

Edward J. McCluskey

Since the first Phil Kaufman Award for Distinguished Contributions to Electronic System Design was presented in 1994, it’s been a time-honored tradition and recognition within the ESD and semiconductor community. Twenty-five members of our community have been feted at the celebratory dinner co-hosted by its sponsors the ESD Alliance and the IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation (CEDA).

Regrettably, a number of well-deserving individuals who made significant contributions died without receiving the Phil Kaufman Award while they were alive. A policy set by the IEEE disqualifies deceased members of the community from being eligible to receive the Phil Kaufman Award.

The nomination committee decided to act with a new posthumous remembrance called the Phil Kaufman Hall of Fame. The first honorees are Jim Hogan, executive, angel investor and board member, and Stanford University Professor Edward J. McCluskey, acknowledged for their significant and noteworthy contributions.

Ed McCluskey died in 2016. Jim Hogan died in February 2021. Both are legendary, outsized personalities with considerable accomplishments. Ed was a Computer Engineering pioneer who shaped the design and testing of digital systems for more than 50 years and will be remembered for showing up at events wearing a hat from his large collection. Jim was responsible for launching and/or guiding countless EDA and semiconductor startups and understood the importance of fueling the semiconductor ecosystem with new and disruptive ideas.

According to his nominators, Ed McCluskey sustained a relentless pace of fundamental contributions for efficient and robust design, and high-quality testing and reliable operation of digital systems. He was a leading educator and a pioneer in establishing and fostering computer engineering as a profession. His textbooks on logic design defined the discipline. He established the Computer Engineering curriculum at Princeton and founded the university computer center in the early 1960s. At Stanford, he founded the Digital Systems Lab (now Computer Systems Lab) that cultivated collaboration between Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and the Center for Reliable Computing to advance the fields of computer reliability and testing. Ed produced 75 Ph.D. graduates and was the recipient of numerous awards and honors.

A popular and highly visible industry presence, Jim Hogan was managing partner of Vista Ventures, LLC., and an experienced senior executive who worked in the semiconductor design and manufacturing industry for more than 40 years. Jim served on numerous boards of directors for private electronic design automation, intellectual property, semiconductor equipment, material science and IT companies and acted as a strategic advisor for private and public companies. We considered him a great friend of the ESD Alliance in large measure because of the numerous events he organized where he took entrepreneurs through their journey from start up to acquisition, often with behind-the-scenes insights into the experience.

The Phil Kaufman Award

The Phil Kaufman Award for Distinguished Contributions to Electronic System Design went on hiatus last year due to the pandemic. While the decision was difficult, a dinner ceremony, central to celebrating the recipient’s contributions to the industry and accomplishments, was out of the question in late 2020 or early 2021.

The Phil Kaufman Award is back on track for 2021 and we’re planning to host the awards dinner in early 2022, great news for our community. The nomination period for this year’s recipient closes June 30. Nominations from 2020 will be included in the pool as new entries and past nominations from 2017 through 2019 will also be considered.
