Today is the day some EDA purists thought would never happen: The disassembling of an industry status quo that’s been in place for over 20 years
As of today, Mentor Graphics has been sold and is fully owned by Siemens. Now Mentor’s arc of history will be decided by folks not residing in the green forests and hills of northern Oregon, and the Big Three cartel is no more. A cartel which has slowly consolidated the playing field over time until nary a startup can be seen.
The power vested in the Big Three EDA companies has grown steadily and inexorably over these years, as has their market dominance. Examination of recent numbers provided by the ESD Alliance Market Statistics Service indicates that today, in excess of 85-percent of the revenue earned in the EDA industry can be attributed to the combination of Synopsys, Cadence, and Mentor Graphics.
These three companies, their leadership, sales prowess, and increasing control of the conversation and technical direction in the industry has made for a powerful cartel. But again, that cartel is no more and the crystal ball predicting future dynamics within the EDA industry has gone dark.

In the spirit of full disclosure, Cadence paid for lunch yesterday for the Press Corps attending CDNLive 2014. We had a scrumptious gourmet meal at Tosca in the lobby of the Hyatt Regency before returning to the Santa Clara Convention Center next door to have an hour-long “one-on-one” with Cadence CEO Lip-Bu Tan. In truth, it was actually an hour-long “twenty-on-one” with CEO Tan, because all of the usual suspects EDA Press Corps was in the room throwing softball lobbing questions at Tan.
Over the course of the hour, we learned that CEO Tan has a host of different investment partners – sorry, didn’t write down the names – involved in his various VC-funded ventures that span everything from GoPro [the trendy wearable camera enterprise out of Half Moon Bay] to a fabless startup that he said can tape-out a design at 16 nanometers for a scant $15 million, rather than the usual $150 million being lamented today in the global press. [In fact, Tan mentioned so many ventures he’s involved with, it begs the question: How does he have time to run Cadence?]
We learned that CEO Tan is very excited about all of the technologies involved in the semiconductor design/supply chain, that he believes it’s a great time to be a player in the industry, and that Cadence is innovating rapidly on multiple fronts simultaneously. And if/whenever Tan senses that they’re slowing down in any particular area, he pushes Cadence Engineering to move forward even faster.

The premier EDA conference in Europe – many say, in the world – will be in Dresden this year, starting March 12th. There’s a certain something about DATE, a unique quality and consistent energy that runs throughout this conference that really sets it apart, whether in Nice, Munich, Grenoble, or Dresden.
Now in its 15th edition, Design, Automation & Test in Europe seems to get better with each passing year – more refined, focused, and confident, and more unabashedly academic, while still offering a rich experience for exhibitors wanting to showcase their latest and greatest.
With 55+ exhibitors this year, over 200 papers selected from almost a thousand submissions for the 2012 conference, 77 different technical sessions, keynotes from Bosch Automotive Electronics Division President Klaus Meder, and GlobalFoundries Senior Vice President for Design Enablement Mojy Chian, a host of tutorials, panel discussions, and workshops, a Sigda-sponsored PhD forum, and the annual EDAA Lifetime Achievement Award presentation – this year going to UC Berkeley’s own Prof. Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli – DATE is on tap to deliver another terrific week-long event.
University of Tübingen Dean of Science Prof. Wolfgang Rosenstiel is General Chair for DATE 2012. Not surprisingly, when we spoke by phone on March 2nd, he was extremely enthused about the Dresden event. I asked him how the conference has evolved over the years.
Dr. Rosenstiel said, “DATE started in 1998 as the merger of two other European conferences, EURO-DAC and ED&T. Since then, DATE has taken place every year, mainly between France and Germany.
“What has changed over the years? While we have kept the central theme of design, automation, and test in Europe, from there we have widened the focus in two directions.
“The applications of microelectronics have come more clearly into focus at DATE, with special tracks which continue to grow, and there has been an increasing emphasis on embedded systems.
