Real Intent: Leveraging on Investments

Thursday, September 14th, 2017

Prakash Narain is a long-standing member of the EDA community
, having helped found Real Intent in 1999. In August 2016, I interviewed Dr. Narain at length about the technology at the core of the company. This week we spoke again, starting with an update of the company’s announcements around DAC in June, which involve further advancements in clock-domain crossing analysis and sign-off.

Real Intent must be doing something right, because Narain seems as enthused about the prospects for his company as someone who has just launched a tech start-up. It takes stamina and courage to sustain that optimism, and market success. Narain says his organization has both.

DVCon Panel: Problems in Paradise

Thursday, March 2nd, 2017

DVCon generates a lot of respect
, and for good reason. Engineers have attended this conference for over 25 years to further refine their skills in the area of design and verification. Yet, there’s a problem in paradise.

In an industry like EDA that’s super dominated by just three players, there’s little if any room in the industry – or at a conference like DVCon – to showcase the ideas and innovations of the Small Guys. The Big Guys teach tutorials and present papers; the Small Guys get to hang posters in the hallways.

All of that was supposed to change tonight thanks to the sponsorship of the ESD Alliance and OneSpin Solutions, as well as Vista Ventures’ Jim Hogan.

Tonight, six of the Small Guys in verification appeared on a panel moderated by Hogan hoping to get their 60-minute shot at fame. A post-Happy-Hour hour in which to lay out their case for customers to come and sample the kind of innovation that everyone knows is the watchword of technology startups, particularly in EDA.

Real Intent: A sustained culture of Respect & Innovation

Thursday, August 25th, 2016

Real Intent, a Silicon Valley-based EDA company
, has been underway since 1999. That’s a lot of time for a company to continue to succeed amidst the shifting sands of an industry that specializes in either acquiring smaller companies or under-cutting their prices until the smaller companies simply close their doors.

In other words, Real Intent is a survivor and tells a remarkable story of steady perseverance and a well-established, respectful relationship with its customer base. Without both of these things, the company could not have remained viable.

This week, I enjoyed an excellent phone call with company CEO, Prakash Narain, a conversation of particular interest because Dr. Narain spoke candidly of the challenges that face small EDA companies in the current business climate.

Prakash Narain: creating a unique workplace culture at Real Intent

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

Every year, Forbes publishes a list of the Best Companies To Work For. The winners are always big companies, ones well known by you and me. The problem is that Forbes’ polling techniques are flawed. If they were not, EDA stalwart Real Intent would most definitely make the list, particularly if the folks from Forbes were to have been in on a recent phone call with Real Intent President & CEO Prakash Narain.

Real Intent: New Look, New Location, New Year

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

It’s a bit early for New Year’s Resolutions, but Real Intent has gotten a jump on the popular annual ritual. As of today, the company is declaring “a bold new look for its corporate logo and Web-site, and a new location for its headquarters.”

The press release reiterates Real Intent’s offerings – Ascent,  Ascent Lint, Ascent Implied Intent Verification, Ascent X-Verification System, Meridian,  Meridian CDC, and Meridian Constraints – and says, “with the capabilities [of these products] in mind, Real Intent re-imagined its logo to mimic the real intent of these software offerings. The familiar white and blue logo now is recast with striking simplicity.

“The new ‘look’ graphically parallels the simplicity and speed with which SoC designers can use Real Intent’s technology. The transformation mirrors Real Intent’s evolutionary change from an EDA formal verification company to a best-in-class verification solution company. Real Intent has also transformed its Web-site with a dramatic, clean new look and simple navigation that parallels the simplicity and ease of use of its solutions.”

Now, you may say that all of this is being done just to catch the eye of a jaded public, but consider how hard change really is.
