Alain Labat, the former President & CEO of VaST Systems, told me on a phone call this week that his story, in a way, is very simple: “When we got acquired by Synopsys in 2010, 5 years ago now, our management and investors clearly saw an opportunity to start our own investment bank and advisory company, so that’s what we did.
“We believed then, and still believe, that if you need a big bank from New York or a huge amount of money [to begin your enterprise], the right people are the Goldman Sachs or the other Wall Street guys. But for a technology-based company, you need something different.
“And so, at the advice of our investors, we started Harvest Management Partners specifically for those companies who need something different. Coming from VaST as we did, with a great deal of true operational experience, we felt we could offer much-needed guidance to those companies who were not a good fit for Wall Street.

Let’s be honest about this. The reason the Electronic Design Process Symposium takes place every year in Monterey is because of the surf and sunshine. Otherwise, this conference would be so much more appropriately located in Silicon Valley.
Oh well, where’s the harm? Just hop into your favorite woodie, be it a hybrid or an EV, don’t forget the suncream, sandtoys, and surfboard, and head on down to Monterey Bay for two days of great talks, good food, and quiet-ish contemplation, with an emphasis on -ish. The 20th annual EDPS awaits.

Docea Power, founded in 2006 in the Grenoble area of central France by brothers Ghislain and Sylvian Kaiser, now has an office headquartered in Silicon Valley. When CEO Ghislain Kaiser and I spoke by phone this morning, he talked about the company’s product offerings – in particular, those set to be showcased at DAC in San Francisco in early June.
 Ghislain said, “AceThermalModeler is our new tool that is available for both architects and system designers [through which] they can create a compact thermal model for a proposed product.
“True, there are on the market today tools from Mentor [FloTHERM] and Ansys [Icepak] that do thermal analysis, but those tools need a lot of run time because they are not compact. The models they produce are accurate, but require hours and days of compute time.
“Docea’s AceThermalModeler, however, relies on fast computing – just seconds or minutes – so at the architectural and system level the design space can be explored quickly. [In fact], if we compare the models produced by our solution, we are within 5% of the models produced by Mentor or Ansys, so for a great deal of savings in time only a small amount of model accuracy is lost.
