Join us for part two of the ESD Alliance/Accellera work-from-home panel series, “The Executive View — Returning to the Office”, this Wednesday, August 11, at 9am PDT. It will be moderated by KT Moore, Vice President of Cadence Design Systems, and features:
- Donna Yasay, Senior Leader, Solutions Architecture at Amazon Web Services (AWS)
- Vicki Mitchell, Vice President, Systems Engineering of Arm
- Amin Shokrollahi, CEO and President at Kandou
- Geoffrey Shippee Vice President Engineering with Qualcomm
In “Remote Work, Remote Chip Design: Building Chips During a Pandemic,” panelists appeared to take the “Keep Calm and Carry On*” refrain while remotely designing and building chips over the past 17 months.
Now it’s time to hear the executive point of view as the semiconductor industry starts transitioning back to the office. This panel of executives will build on the earlier discussion with a sweeping view of the industry’s new-found resiliency. The virtual conversation will explore transition strategies, planning the tradeoffs between remote and in-office work and corporate travel.

As Wally Rhines concluded his talk during SEMI’s “Innovation for a Transforming World,” we broke the news that our industry’s revenue increased 17% to $3,1571.7 million in Q1 2021, the highest total Q1 growth in 21 years. And according to Wally, Executive Sponsor of the SEMI Electronic Design Market Data (EDMD) report, and President and CEO of Cornami, this increase is almost three times the historical average.
While his opening slides in “Trends in the Semiconductor Design Ecosystem” covered the highlights of the EDMD report, Wally used the presentation to showcase some unmistakable megatrends driving the historic growth. EDA has shown sustained growth for more than a decade with new methodologies driving revenue growth. Since 2021, the industry has shown 8% CAGR and is now an $11.4-billion market.

Here’s a closer look at the first honorees –– Jim Hogan and Edward J. McCluskey –– of the first Phil Kaufman Award for Distinguished Contributions to Electronic System Design than my earlier post.
Jim Hogan
Edward J. McCluskey
Since the first Phil Kaufman Award for Distinguished Contributions to Electronic System Design was presented in 1994, it’s been a time-honored tradition and recognition within the ESD and semiconductor community. Twenty-five members of our community have been feted at the celebratory dinner co-hosted by its sponsors the ESD Alliance and the IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation (CEDA).
Regrettably, a number of well-deserving individuals who made significant contributions died without receiving the Phil Kaufman Award while they were alive. A policy set by the IEEE disqualifies deceased members of the community from being eligible to receive the Phil Kaufman Award.
The nomination committee decided to act with a new posthumous remembrance called the Phil Kaufman Hall of Fame. The first honorees are Jim Hogan, executive, angel investor and board member, and Stanford University Professor Edward J. McCluskey, acknowledged for their significant and noteworthy contributions.

SEMI’s “Innovation for a Transforming World” is less than a week away and promises two half-days loaded with technology trends and insights into the digital transformation. Join SEMI and the ESD Alliance Tuesday and Wednesday, July 13-14, from 8:30am-noon PDT to learn more.
Of particular interest to our community is a talk from Wally Rhines, always a crowd pleaser, who will discuss “Trends in the Semiconductor Design Ecosystem” from 9:30 am to 10am Wednesday.
Wally, Executive Sponsor of the SEMI Electronic Design Market Data (EDMS) report, and President and CEO of Cornami, will review the results of the most recent EDMS report, previously the Market Statistics Survey (MSS). While recent trends in the EDA and IP software market will be his focus, he will outline future directions, areas with the most rapid change and increased purchases of EDA and IP software by systems companies. Significant investment in semiconductor and EDA startups in China and the effect of COVID on design activity will be included in his talk, as will increased importance of EDA for applications such as packaging, AI, machine learning and cybersecurity.
The two-day virtual event will feature experts on digital transformation and the market outlook, technology trends and market Indicators and drivers. The first global conference for “Innovation for a Transforming World” will explore an optimal balance of resources for preserving current expertise and customers, while innovating to engage the next technology demands.

SEMI has a way to beat the heat this summer with two days of talks and presentations on “Innovation for a Transforming World,” Tuesday and Wednesday, July 13-14, from 8:30am-noon PDT.
Close the door to your home office or corporate cubicle and Zoom in as experts describe digital transformation on day one and the market outlook, technology trends and market Indicators and drivers on day two. Each day will offer a set of best practices that can be applied to all the transformations we’re experiencing.
The ESD Alliance will be well represented by Wally Rhines, Executive Sponsor of the SEMI Electronic Design Market Data (EDMS) report, and President and CEO of Cornami, on day two with “Trends in the Semiconductor Design Ecosystem.” Wally will build on the most recent EDMS report, formerly known as the Market Statistics Survey (MSS), to address recent trends in the market for EDA and IP software.
Wally Rhines
Attendees can expect vast insights from Wally into likely future directions as he points out areas with the most rapid change, including increased purchases of EDA and IP software by systems companies. His talk will be held Wednesday from 9:25-9:50am PDT.
He will cover other topics that touch on the significant investment in semiconductor and EDA startups in China and the effect of COVID on design activity. Wally will conclude with a review of the increased importance of EDA for applications such as packaging, AI, machine learning and cybersecurity.
The two-day virtual event is open to everyone, though the talks are tailored to senior executives from presidents and CEOs, COOs, CMOs and CTOs to chief data and innovation officers. Day one will present ideas for adapting business models, addressing customer needs and digital touch points and the ways the more decentralized world changed innovation. Day one topics will be of interest to financial and industry analysts, marketing and sales and business development professionals and concentrate on how businesses will thrive through disruption to provide resiliency, vision and culture.

If you had trouble settling into working from home last year, you are not alone. Now try to imagine how our engineering community managed a collective set of challenges as they attempted complex chip innovation from their home offices. Yes, I know –– daunting.
And so, I invite you to attend a panel that shines a light on the chip design and verification project upheaval caused by the pandemic. Set aside an hour Wednesday, June 9, to join us for a lesson on overcoming the perils of chip design at home. It will be populated by chip design and verification engineers accustomed to robust software and hardware resources readily available at their physical office.
This panel is co-hosted by two stalwarts of the electronic system design ecosystem –– the ESD Alliance and Accellera, a long-overdue industry first that I expect will not be the last. The ESD Alliance and SEMI, where we are a Technology Community, welcome the partnership.
As our panelists will attest, work from home, WFH, remote work or whatever you call this last year changed our routines and our lives, possibly forever. Design and verification didn’t stop even though our panelists had to work through hits to their complicated flows and project cycles due to VPN tool and system access, Zoom-based collaboration and everyday home interruptions.
