Continued Good News as ESD Industry Revenue Grows to $3.8B in Q3’2022

Tuesday, January 24th, 2023

We published our latest Electronic Design Market Data (EDMD) report and it continues to be good news for the Electronic System Design (ESD) industry. According to the report, revenue increased 8.9% from $3,458.2 million in Q3 2021 to $3,767.4 million in Q3 2022. The four-quarter moving average that compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four rose 13.4%.

Wally Rhines is the executive sponsor and founder of the SEMI EDMD report and a long-time supporter of the ESD Alliance, a SEMI Technology Community. His positive comments in the news release may bode well for the rest of the year: “The EDA industry posted overall gains in Q3 2022 with double-digit increases in all product categories except Semiconductor IP. All geographic regions except Japan recorded growth in the quarter with Asia Pacific reporting a double-digit increase.”

Our industry’s headcount in Q3 2022 hit 55,369 people globally working for companies tracked in the EDMD report, an 8.2% increase over the Q3 2021 headcount of 51,182 and up 1.8% compared to Q2 2022.

Total Revenue by Segments

Some additional statistics pulled from this EDMD report reports revenue by product and application category, highlighting year-over-year change. For example, Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) revenue increased 16.7% to $1,231.2 million with a four-quarter CAE moving average increased 14.8%. IC Physical Design and Verification revenue increased 12.2% to $687.4 million, a four-quarter moving average for the category increased 3.4%.

In the category of Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module (PCB and MCM), revenue increased 15.6% to $344.7 million that comes to a four-quarter moving average for PCB and MCM rose 13.2%. Services revenue increased 20.8% to $144 million, bringing the four-quarter Services moving average to an increase of 26.8%.

As Wally Rhines mentioned, revenue decreased in Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP) category 1.0% to $1,360.2 million, though the four-quarter SIP moving average grew 16.5%.

Moving on to revenue by region and year-over-year change, the Americas, the largest reporting region by revenue, procured $1,622.1 million of electronic system design products and services in Q3 2022, an 8.5% increase. The four-quarter moving average rose 16.8%. Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) purchased $451 million of electronic system design products and services in Q3 2022, a 0.2% increase for a four-quarter moving average growth of 3.8%. Asia Pacific (APAC) secured $1,456.4 million of electronic system design products and services in Q3 2022, a 16.3% increase with a four-quarter moving average increased 16.2%. Buying electronic system design products and services in Japan decreased 8.5% to $237.8 million. The four-quarter moving average declined 0.8%.

About the EDMD Report

Total EDA, SIP and Services Revenue by Region

Public and private companies contribute data to the quarterly Electronic Design Market Data (formerly the Market Statistics Service) report available from SEMI and produced by the ESD Alliance. It presents EDA, SIP and services industry revenue data quarterly published approximately three months after quarter close. The EDMD report data is segmented by revenue product category and numerous detailed sub-categories such as geographic region and total employment at participating companies.

The Phil Kaufman Award Ceremony and Banquet

A reminder that the Phil Kaufman Award Ceremony and Banquet honoring Dr. Giovanni (Nanni) De Micheli will be held Thursday, February 23, at 6:30pm in San Jose.

The event we’re co-hosting with the other award sponsor the IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation (CEDA) will be held at The GlassHouse in San Jose, Calif. Member tickets are $225 each and $275 per non-member. Member pricing is offered for individuals or companies that are active SEMI or IEEE members. Registration is found on the ESD Alliance website or the CEDA website.

Nanni is being recognized for his contributions to EDA, including his research on EDA tools and methodologies that helped drive significant advances in the academic field of design automation. He is professor and director of the Institute of Electrical Engineering (IEL) and of the Integrated Systems Centre at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

IBS CEO Handel Jones on the Race to the Future of AI

Thursday, January 12th, 2023

Not long ago, I had a fascinating discussion with Handel Jones about his book – When AI Rules The World: China, the U.S. and the Race to Control a Smart Planet. Below is a condensed version of our conversation that initially appeared on the SEMI website.

Handel Jones, CEO of International Business Strategies (IBS) and a well-known, longtime strategic analyst and commentator covering the semiconductor industry, authored the recently published book – When AI Rules The World: China, the U.S. and the Race to Control a Smart Planet. I spoke with Jones about the fascinating read.

Smith: The book starts off with the statement that China is way ahead in artificial intelligence (AI) and that the U.S. is dangerously behind. Can you summarize the main reasons this has happened?

Jones: AI is heavily dependent on connectivity bandwidth, and China is ahead of the U.S. in 5G connectivity. In addition, China is making extensive use of AI for 3D facial recognition, which is making transactions more efficient, and the mass market for 3D facial recognition is resulting in large improvements in the technology. The 3D facial recognition technology is being used in military applications, including drones, and other areas that require image recognition. This is one example of where China is moving ahead of the U.S. Other areas include adoption of digital currency, autonomous transportation, quantum computing, battery technology, smart robots, and health monitoring.
