ESD Alliance CEO Outlook, Phil Kaufman Award Ceremony and Phil Kaufman Hall of Fame Nominations Open

March 30th, 2022 by Bob Smith, Executive Director

It’s going to be a busy and exciting few weeks for the Electronic System Design Alliance (ESD Alliance) and our community at large. Perhaps you might like to join us for our two in-person events.

CEO Outlook

We start with the return of our CEO Outlook Thursday, April 28, in Santa Clara, Calif., with Ed Sperling, editor in chief of Semiconductor Engineering, serving as moderator. Joining him as panelists are Dr. Anirudh Devgan of Cadence Design Systems, Niels Fache from Keysight Technologies, Aki Fujimura of D2S, Siemens EDA’s Joe Sawicki and Simon Segars of Arm.

The in-person event, co-sponsored by Keysight, will be held at Agilent’s Building 5 at 5301 Stevens Creek Blvd. in Santa Clara, Calif., beginning at 5:30pm PDT with a networking reception with food and beverages. The CEO Outlook discussion begins at 6:30pm. It is free for ESD Alliance and SEMI members. Pricing for non-members is $49 per person. Click here for registration information.

The ESD Alliance Annual Membership meeting will be held prior to the start of the CEO Outlook beginning at 5pm. Non-members are welcome to attend if they purchase a ticket for the CEO Outlook.

Phil Kaufman Award Ceremony and Banquet

We move on to the 2021 Phil Kaufman Award ceremony and banquet Thursday, May 12, where Dr. Anirudh Devgan will be honored with the 2021 Phil Kaufman Award for Distinguished Contributions to Electronic System Design. We will host the celebration along with the IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation (CEDA) from 6:30pm until 9:30pm at The GlassHouse, 2 South Market St. in San Jose, Calif.

Early bird pricing for tickets is available through Friday, April 8, at $175 per individual from member companies and $225 each for non-members. Member tickets after April 8 are $225 each and $275 per non-member. Member pricing is offered for individuals in companies that are active SEMI members or active IEEE members. Sponsorship opportunities are available as well. Contact me at bsmith@semi.org for more information.

Registration, COVID-19 protocols and additional details can be found on the 2021 Phil Kaufman Award ceremony and banquet page.

Phil Kaufman Hall of Fame Honor

The prestigious Phil Kaufman Award was established as a tribute to Phil Kaufman, the late industry pioneer who turned innovative technologies into commercial businesses that have benefited electronic system designers. It honors individuals who have had a demonstrable impact on the field of electronic system design through technology innovations, education/mentoring, or business or industry leadership.

We expanded the program last year to introduce the Phil Kaufman Hall of Fame Honor. Co-sponsored by the ESD Alliance and IEEE CEDA, this honor recognizes individuals posthumously who made significant and noteworthy contributions to electronic system design but did not receive the Phil Kaufman Award while they were alive. Deceased members of the community are not eligible to receive the Phil Kaufman Award, a policy set by the IEEE. Inaugural honorees in 2021 were Jim Hogan, executive, angel investor and board member, and Stanford University Professor Edward J. McCluskey.

Nominations are open for the 2022 Phil Kaufman Hall of Fame honor and we encourage you to consider acknowledging a deceased member of our community who was not honored with the Phil Kaufman Award.

Selections for the Hall of Fame are determined through a nomination process. Nominations are reviewed by the ESD Alliance and IEEE CEDA Kaufman Award selection committees. A special Phil Kaufman Hall of Fame page on the ESD Alliance and IEEE CEDA websites host photos, citations and tributes to the selected inductees.

The nomination period runs through Friday, April 29, and inductees will be announced in June. The link to the nomination form can be found here. Nominations submitted in 2021 will be valid through 2023.

The ESD Alliance serves as the central voice to communicate and promote the value of the semiconductor design ecosystem as a vital component of the global electronics industry. We have an ongoing series of networking and educational events, programs and initiatives. Additionally, as a SEMI Technology Community, ESD Alliance companies can join SEMI at no extra cost.
