The ESD Alliance closes the month of May with news that Simon Segars, CEO of Arm, is chair of our recently elected 10-member Governing Council. The council unanimously nominated him to the position, and we’re pleased that he is our new chair. We have plenty to accomplish moving forward with an exciting new set of programs and initiatives, especially as ES Design West kicks off in July. His knowledge, expertise, leadership and sound advice is welcome and valued. Simon leads our Governing Council, a mix of long-time members and three newcomers, who will serve a two-year term. New Governing Council members are Dr. Raik Brinkmann, president and CEO of OneSpin Solutions, Dr. Prakash Narain, president and CEO of Real Intent and David Dutton, CEO of Silvaco. ES Design West –– Beyond Smart We’re spreading the word –– ES Design West is Beyond Smart and only a few weeks away. Co-located with SEMICON West 2019, ES Design West links electronic system and semiconductor design with the electronic product manufacturing and supply chain to highlight how the disciplines are drawing closer together. We’re planning a great lineup of keynotes, talks, presentations, recognizable exhibitors, networking and more. Come see for yourself July 9-11 in San Francisco’s Moscone Center all the commercial achievements of our electronic system design ecosystem and forward-looking, system-centric design approaches. Follow ES Design West on Twitter: #ESDesignWest HOT Party at ES Design West –– Beyond Hot The annual Heart of Technology (HOT) fundraising party sponsored by Jim Hogan will be Beyond Hot at ES Design West and SEMICON West. John Colins Lounge in San Francisco will host the HOT Party from 5:30pm until 10pm. Badge holders at ES Design West and SEMICON West will be admitted with a suggested minimum $20 donation. Other guests can attend for a donation of $50. Since space is limited, organizers are recommending signing up now. This year’s beneficiary is the SEMI Foundation supporting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and career awareness in high technology. All proceeds event will be contributed to the SEMI Foundation. Through its High-Tech U (HTU) programs, the SEMI Foundation gives high school students a better understanding of how STEM is used to solve real-world problems and lays the groundwork for their entry into STEM educations and careers in high technology. Since 2001, HTU has engaged with more than 8,000 students in 12 states and nine countries. Simon led the development of early ground-breaking Arm processors –– the Arm7 and Arm9 –– powering the world’s first digital mobile phones. He played a key role in developing industry standards, and his engineering work led to him being granted several embedded-systems patents. He became vice president of engineering in 2001, and before being named as Arm CEO in July 2013, he held several other strategy positions including global head of sales. He was personally responsible for expanding the company’s U.S. business and strengthening its leadership and relationships in California’s Silicon Valley, where he still lives with his family. Simon helped steer the company through the 2016 acquisition by SoftBank, and, in June 2017, was elected to serve on the SoftBank board. He also sits on the boards of the Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA), the Electronic System Design Alliance (ESD Alliance), TechWorks and is a non-executive director at Dolby Laboratories, Inc. Simon earned his BEng in electronic engineering from the University of Sussex and an MSc in computer science from the University of Manchester. |
