Virus Crisis Hits Optoelectronics, Sensors/Actuators, and Discretes.

Tuesday, May 5th, 2020

After 10 years of record-high sales, combined revenues for optoelectronics, sensors/actuators, and discrete semiconductors are expected to drop 6% in virus-plagued 2020, says the new O-S-D Report.

When 2020 began, global conditions pointed to single-digit percentage market growth this year for optoelectronics, sensors and actuators, and discrete semiconductors (known collectively as O-S-D devices), but the outlook suddenly deteriorated in the first quarter due to the worldwide outbreak of the Covid-19 coronavirus.  The virus crisis deepened by the end of March, resulting in IC Insights cutting its 2020 semiconductor forecast and changing the growth outlook for the next five years.  The revised forecast is contained in IC Insights’ new 2020 O-S-D Report—A Market Analysis and Forecast for Optoelectronics, Sensors/Actuators, and Discretes, which shows total O-S-D sales falling 6% this year, ending a decade-long string of record-high annual sales (Figure 1).

Six O-S-D Product Categories Will Hit Record Sales in 2019

Tuesday, November 12th, 2019

Despite a slowdown, combined revenues for optoelectronics, sensors/actuators, and discrete semiconductors are expected to barely set a 10th consecutive record high in 2019, followed by gradual strengthening in 2020 and 2021, says new updated forecast.

With the global economy slowing and the fallout from the U.S.-China trade war causing systems makers to draw down factory inventories, combined sales of optoelectronics, sensors and actuators, and discrete semiconductors (O-S-D) are on pace to grow just 1% in 2019 to $83.5 billion after rising 9% in 2018 and 11% in 2017, according to IC Insights’ update of the O-S-D marketplace.  IC Insights believes O-S-D products will account for about 19% of total worldwide semiconductor sales in 2019 with integrated circuits representing 81% of the entire chip market this year.

Optoelectronics, Sensors/Actuators, and Discretes Hit Record Sales Again

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2019

After a strong increase in 2018, O-S-D growth is expected to pull back in the next two years because of slowing economic growth, but optoelectronics, sensors/actuators, and discretes are each forecast to reach their third straight year of record-high revenues in 2019.

Combined sales of optoelectronics, sensors and actuators, and discrete semiconductors (known collectively as O-S-D) increased 9% in 2018 to reach a ninth consecutive record-high level of $82.4 billion, according to IC Insights’ new 2019 O-S-D Report—A Market Analysis and Forecast for Optoelectronics, Sensors/Actuators, and Discretes.  The new annual report shows total O-S-D sales growing 6% in 2019 to reach a record-high $87.1 billion.

For the second year in a row, all three segments of O-S-D achieved all-time high sales in 2018 with different growth rates being driven by a variety of factors and market conditions in the year, says the new 350-page report.  O-S-D products accounted for 16% of the world’s $504.1 billion in total semiconductor sales in 2018 with the rest of the revenues coming from integrated circuits.

The 2018 increase in total O-S-D sales was nearly 1.5x the average annual growth rate for these semiconductors since the mid-1990s.  The O-S-D Report’s five-year forecast shows revenue growth in optoelectronics, sensors/actuators, and discretes declining in 2019 and 2020 with the global economy slowing in the next two years (Figure 1).  All three O-S-D market segments are once again forecast to reach record-high revenues in 2019 with a “soft landing” expected to occur in most product categories during the slowdown in 2020.

Outlook Remains Bright for Automotive Electronic Systems Growth

Monday, December 10th, 2018
Despite some high-profile setbacks with autonomous vehicles, auto electronic systems growth projects well; remains a hotbed for semiconductor growth.
Sales of automotive electronic systems are forecast to increase 7.0% in 2018 and 6.3% in 2019, the highest growth rate in both years among the six major end-use applications for semiconductors.  Figure 1 shows that sales of automotive-related electronic systems are forecast to increase to $152 billion in 2018 from $142 billion in 2017, and are forecast to rise to $162 billion in 2019.  Furthermore, automotive electronic systems are expected to enjoy a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.4% from 2017 through 2021, again topping all other major system categories, based on recent findings by IC Insights.

Figure 1
Overall, the automotive segment is expected to account for 9.4% of the $1.62 trillion total worldwide electronic systems market in 2018 (Figure 2), a slight increase from 9.1% in 2017. Automotive has increased only incrementally over the years, and is forecast to show only marginal gains as a percent of the total electronic systems market through 2021, when it is forecast to account for 9.9% of global electronic systems sales.  Though accounting for a rather small percentage of total electronic system marketshare in 2018, (larger only than the government/military category), automotive is expected to be the fastest-growing segment through 2021.

Figure 2
Technology features that are focused on self-driving (autonomous) vehicles, ADAS, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, on-board safety, convenience, and environmental features, as well as ongoing interest in electric vehicles, continues to lift the market for automotive electronics systems, despite some highly publicized accidents involving self-driving vehicles this year that were at least partly blamed on technology miscues.

New advancements are more widely available onboard mid range and entry-level cars and as aftermarket products, which has further raised automotive system growth in recent years.  In the semiconductor world, this is particularly good news for makers of analog ICs, MCUs, and sensors since a great number of all of these devices are required in most of these automotive systems. It is worth noting that the Automotive—Special Purpose Logic category is forecast to increase 29% this year—second only to the DRAM market, and the Automotive—Application-Specific Analog market is forecast to jump 14% this year—as backup cameras, blind-spot (lane departure) detectors, and other “intelligent” systems are mandated or otherwise being added to more vehicles.  Meanwhile, memory (specifically, DRAM and flash memory) is increasingly playing a more critical role in the development of new automotive system solutions used in vehicles.
