2020-2022 expected to be the first 3-year period of double-digit capex growth since 1993-1995.
Figure 1 shows that after surging 36% in 2021, semiconductor industry capital spending is forecast to jump 24% in 2022 to a new all-time high of $190.4 billion, up 86% from just three years earlier in 2019. Moreover, if capital spending increases by ≥10% in 2022, it would mark the first three-year period of double-digit spending increases in the semiconductor industry since the 1993-1995 timeperiod.

After 10 years of record-high sales, combined revenues for optoelectronics, sensors/actuators, and discrete semiconductors are expected to drop 6% in virus-plagued 2020, says the new O-S-D Report.
When 2020 began, global conditions pointed to single-digit percentage market growth this year for optoelectronics, sensors and actuators, and discrete semiconductors (known collectively as O-S-D devices), but the outlook suddenly deteriorated in the first quarter due to the worldwide outbreak of the Covid-19 coronavirus. The virus crisis deepened by the end of March, resulting in IC Insights cutting its 2020 semiconductor forecast and changing the growth outlook for the next five years. The revised forecast is contained in IC Insights’ new 2020 O-S-D Report—A Market Analysis and Forecast for Optoelectronics, Sensors/Actuators, and Discretes, which shows total O-S-D sales falling 6% this year, ending a decade-long string of record-high annual sales (Figure 1).

Despite a slowdown, combined revenues for optoelectronics, sensors/actuators, and discrete semiconductors are expected to barely set a 10th consecutive record high in 2019, followed by gradual strengthening in 2020 and 2021, says new updated forecast.
With the global economy slowing and the fallout from the U.S.-China trade war causing systems makers to draw down factory inventories, combined sales of optoelectronics, sensors and actuators, and discrete semiconductors (O-S-D) are on pace to grow just 1% in 2019 to $83.5 billion after rising 9% in 2018 and 11% in 2017, according to IC Insights’ update of the O-S-D marketplace. IC Insights believes O-S-D products will account for about 19% of total worldwide semiconductor sales in 2019 with integrated circuits representing 81% of the entire chip market this year.

After a strong increase in 2018, O-S-D growth is expected to pull back in the next two years because of slowing economic growth, but optoelectronics, sensors/actuators, and discretes are each forecast to reach their third straight year of record-high revenues in 2019.
Combined sales of optoelectronics, sensors and actuators, and discrete semiconductors (known collectively as O-S-D) increased 9% in 2018 to reach a ninth consecutive record-high level of $82.4 billion, according to IC Insights’ new 2019 O-S-D Report—A Market Analysis and Forecast for Optoelectronics, Sensors/Actuators, and Discretes. The new annual report shows total O-S-D sales growing 6% in 2019 to reach a record-high $87.1 billion.
For the second year in a row, all three segments of O-S-D achieved all-time high sales in 2018 with different growth rates being driven by a variety of factors and market conditions in the year, says the new 350-page report. O-S-D products accounted for 16% of the world’s $504.1 billion in total semiconductor sales in 2018 with the rest of the revenues coming from integrated circuits.
The 2018 increase in total O-S-D sales was nearly 1.5x the average annual growth rate for these semiconductors since the mid-1990s. The O-S-D Report’s five-year forecast shows revenue growth in optoelectronics, sensors/actuators, and discretes declining in 2019 and 2020 with the global economy slowing in the next two years (Figure 1). All three O-S-D market segments are once again forecast to reach record-high revenues in 2019 with a “soft landing” expected to occur in most product categories during the slowdown in 2020.

Samsung extends its number one ranking and sales lead over Intel to 23%.
IC Insights will release its May Update to the 2018 McClean Report later this month. This Update includes a discussion of the 1Q18 IC industry market results, an update of the 2018 capital spending forecast by company, and a look at the top-25 1Q18 semiconductor suppliers (the top-15 1Q18 semiconductor suppliers are covered in this research bulletin).
The top-15 worldwide semiconductor (IC and O-S-D—optoelectronic, sensor, and discrete) sales ranking for 1Q18 is shown in Figure 1. It includes eight suppliers headquartered in the U.S., three in Europe, two in South Korea, and one each in Taiwan and Japan. After announcing in early April 2018 that it had successfully moved its headquarters location from Singapore to the U.S. IC Insights now classifies Broadcom as a U.S. company.
The top-15 ranking includes one pure-play foundry (TSMC) and four fabless companies. If TSMC were excluded from the top-15 ranking, Taiwan-based fabless supplier MediaTek ($1,696 million) would have been ranked in the 15th position.
IC Insights includes foundries in the top-15 semiconductor supplier ranking since it has always viewed the ranking as a top supplier list, not a marketshare ranking, and realizes that in some cases the semiconductor sales are double counted. With many of our clients being vendors to the semiconductor industry (supplying equipment, chemicals, gases, etc.), excluding large IC manufacturers like the foundries would leave significant “holes” in the list of top semiconductor suppliers. As shown in the listing, the foundries and fabless companies are identified. In the April Update to The McClean Report, marketshare rankings of IC suppliers by product type were presented and foundries were excluded from these listings.

Embedded imaging applications in cars, security, machine vision, medical, virtual reality, and other new uses will offset slow growth in camera phones, says new report.
The spread of digital camera applications in vehicles, machine vision, human recognition and security systems, as well as for more powerful camera phones will drive CMOS image sensor sales to an eighth straight record-high level this year with worldwide revenues growing 10% to $13.7 billion, following a 19% surge in 2017, according to IC Insights’ 2018 O-S-D Report—A Market Analysis and Forecast for Optoelectronics, Sensors/Actuators, and Discretes. The new 375-page report shows nothing stopping CMOS image sensors from continuing to set record-high annual sales and unit shipments through 2022 (Figure 1).
