Semi Industry Capex Forecast to Jump 24% and Reach Over $190 Billion This Year

Tuesday, March 1st, 2022

2020-2022 expected to be the first 3-year period of double-digit capex growth since 1993-1995.

Figure 1 shows that after surging 36% in 2021, semiconductor industry capital spending is forecast to jump 24% in 2022 to a new all-time high of $190.4 billion, up 86% from just three years earlier in 2019. Moreover, if capital spending increases by ≥10% in 2022, it would mark the first three-year period of double-digit spending increases in the semiconductor industry since the 1993-1995 timeperiod.

Texas Instruments Continues As World’s Top Analog IC Supplier

Thursday, June 3rd, 2021

Skyworks Solutions posts strongest sales increase in 2020 as the top-10 suppliers collectively accounted for 62% of total analog sales.

Analog ICs remain a critical component in nearly all of today’s digital-centric systems. Consumer, computing, communications, automotive, and industrial/medical systems rely on analog devices to manage power consumption and to help extend battery life in portable devices.

IC Insights’ April Update to the 2021 McClean Report ranked the leading analog IC suppliers for 2020 (Figure 1). Collectively, these 10 companies accounted for $35.4 billion in analog IC sales and represented 62% of the total $57.0 billion analog market last year, the same share they held in 2019.

Sampling of 2Q Semiconductor Sales Guidance Now At -5%

Thursday, June 4th, 2020

Six companies expect an increase in 2Q sales while 15 companies anticipate flat or declining sales.

As part of its May Update to the 2020 McClean Report, IC Insights compiled a list of semiconductor companies that have provided 2Q20 sales guidance. The list included companies from across all geographic regions and all product categories.

Because of uncertainty regarding the impact of Covid-19 on business in the second half of this year, many semiconductor companies have not provided full year 2020 guidance.  However, several provided an outlook for 2Q20 (Figure 1).  Of those that issued quarterly guidance, most expanded the range of their projections to be wider than normal due to uncertainty surrounding the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.  The numbers shown in Figure 1 represent the mid-point of the guidance.

Collectively, the 21 companies on the list anticipate a sequential sales decline of 5% in the second quarter of 2020.  Despite tentative economic conditions, six companies expect to see their sales rise in 2Q, and 15 anticipate a sales decline.

Texas Instruments Widens Its Lead As World’s Top Analog IC Supplier

Thursday, May 9th, 2019

TI’s 2018 analog sales rise to $10.8 billion; Infineon moves into third position, ST posts strongest annual increase as top-10 suppliers collectively account for 60% of total analog market.

The 10 largest suppliers of analog ICs accounted for 60% of worldwide analog sales last year, or $36.1 billion, compared to nearly 61% in 2017, or about $33.0 billion, according to IC Insights’ 2018 rankings of leading semiconductor companies.   The April Update to IC Insights’ 2019 McClean Report ranks the top 50 semiconductor suppliers and lists leading companies in several major product categories, including DRAM, flash memory, microprocessors, microcontrollers, and analog ICs.  Figure 1 shows IC Insights’ ranking of the largest 10 analog suppliers in 2018.

Sony Easily Maintains Its Number 1 Ranking in the Diverse O-S-D Market

Wednesday, April 10th, 2019

Top-10 companies held 39% of the worldwide O-S-D market in 2018, the same level as in 2017.

IC Insights’ new 2019 O-S-D Report—A Market Analysis and Forecast for Optoelectronics, Sensors/Actuators, and Discretes was released at the end of March.  Among the O-S-D industry data included in the new 350-page report is an analysis of the top-30 O-S-D suppliers (the top-10 ranking is discussed in this Research Bulletin).

Companies selling optoelectronics currently dominate the ranking of the top-10 O-S-D suppliers.  Figure 1 shows that nine of the top-10 companies sell optoelectronics, while six offer sensor/actuator semiconductors, and five provide discrete products.  Only four of the top-10 companies sell products in all three O-S-D market segments.  The 10 largest suppliers in the ranking accounted for 39% of combined worldwide O-S-D revenues in 2018, which is the same percentage as in 2017 (in contrast, the top-10 IC suppliers held a 70% share of the total IC market in 2018).
