Worldwide IC Market Forecast to Top $500 Billion in 2021

Tuesday, June 29th, 2021

Industry firing on all cylinders with robust and widespread demand for ICs.

IC Insights will soon release its Mid-Year Update to The McClean Report that includes its most current forecast for the global IC market from 2021 through 2025.  In a very rare event, 32 of the 33 major IC market categories defined by WSTS are forecast to enjoy an increase in sales this year, with 29 of the product categories expected to see significant double-digit gains.  Strong demand across the entire IC market this year is projected to lift sales for the total IC market 24% and break through the $500 billion plateau for the first time in history (Figure 1).

MEMS Semiconductors Strengthen After Holding Up Well in 2020

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2021

Sensors and actuators made with MEMS technology are forecast to grow by high double-digit percentages in the next several years after starting a recovery in 2H20, says new report.

Sales of semiconductor sensors and actuators made with microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology are expected to grow about 16% in 2021 to a record-high $15.9 billion after an 11% increase in 2020 during the economic havoc caused by the Covid-19 virus pandemic and the automotive industry’s worst year in decades, according to IC Insights’ 2021 O-S-D Report—A Market Analysis and Forecast for Optoelectronics, Sensors/Actuators, and Discretes.  Recovery growth in MEMS-based sensor/actuator products surged in the second half of 2020 when manufacturers quickly began to refill inventories after seeing signs of stabilization and recovery in key end-use markets, says the 350-page O-S-D Report. Between 2020 and 2025, sales of MEMS-based sensors and actuators are expected to increase by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.8% to $24.1 billion with shipments rising by a CAGR of 13.4% to 32.1 billion units (Figure 1), based on the O-S-D Report’s five-year forecast.

Automotive IC Marketshare Slips in 2020 After Steady Gains Since 1998

Wednesday, June 9th, 2021

After a 3% drop in 2020, the automotive IC market is forecast to surge more than 25% in 2021.

In this month’s June Update to The McClean Report, IC Insights will present its forecast for IC usage by major product type and end-use application (i.e., computer, communications, consumer, automotive, industrial, and government/military) through 2025.

Figure 1 shows that since 1998, only the automotive and communications end-use segments have gained marketshare. Driven by the global explosion of smartphone demand, the communications market almost doubled its share of the IC market from 18.5% in 1998 to 35.0% in 2020.

Texas Instruments Continues As World’s Top Analog IC Supplier

Thursday, June 3rd, 2021

Skyworks Solutions posts strongest sales increase in 2020 as the top-10 suppliers collectively accounted for 62% of total analog sales.

Analog ICs remain a critical component in nearly all of today’s digital-centric systems. Consumer, computing, communications, automotive, and industrial/medical systems rely on analog devices to manage power consumption and to help extend battery life in portable devices.

IC Insights’ April Update to the 2021 McClean Report ranked the leading analog IC suppliers for 2020 (Figure 1). Collectively, these 10 companies accounted for $35.4 billion in analog IC sales and represented 62% of the total $57.0 billion analog market last year, the same share they held in 2019.
