The Electronic System Design Ecosystem is more than EDA

November 2nd, 2020 by Bob Smith, Executive Director

Our industry portals are filled daily with news about the electronic products chain, all reinforcing the importance of system design and the transformation it has gone through over recent years. Growth and transformation are happening also within the electronic system design ecosystem as it continues to support the designer community.

In the early days of Electronic Design Automation (EDA), designers were afforded schematic capture tools and wowed by the remarkable breakthrough. These days, chip design favors a high-level system-oriented methodology and schematic entry is rarely seen. Complex SoCs never dreamed of in the 1980s drive the many and varied technologies and solutions now available. The electronic system design ecosystem, as well, is varied and broadened from EDA to include semiconductor IP, embedded software, 3D IC design and advanced packaging for system scaling and service companies that provide design know-how and resources.

Tracking the progress and growth of the electronic system design ecosystem is the Electronic System Design Alliance, embracing the changes and promoting the message that design is where electronics begins. The $10-billion electronic system design market segment is supplying the tools and infrastructure to streamline chip design and enable emerging applications and other advances underlying the $2 Trillion global market for electronic products.

Before it was called the ESD Alliance, the EDA Consortium (EDAC) was the reliable forum for addressing cross-industry issues, such as interoperability and export law compliance. The name changed in 2017 and the mission expanded to fully embrace the breadth of the system design ecosystem. Our mission as an international association of companies now is to work with providers of goods and services throughout the electronic system design ecosystem and act as a forum to address technical, marketing, economic and legislative issues affecting them. Our programs fall into five categories –– Risk Management, Growth and Efficiency, Industry Voice, Events and Education –– and are managed by representatives from member companies.

The Risk Management initiative has the Export Committee that represents all member companies with a unified voice in Washington, D.C., on export licensing and compliance issues. Since the ESD Alliance is part of SEMI, the Export Committee works closely with SEMI’s policy and advocacy office in Washington, D.C. The License Management and Anti-Piracy Committee reviews technologies and best practices to help honest users operate within their license agreements, while addressing products and algorithms to hinder theft of member companies’ software and intellectual property.

Growth and Efficiency hosts our Interoperability (OS) Committee, a forum for OS vendors to present and update member companies on their plans. The committee publishes a roadmap for recommended platform support for all member companies and sets expectations with users for supported platforms, helping reduce member company resources and costs to support a wider range of platforms.

Our Emerging Companies Committee offers regular educational events and networking sessions geared toward startup and emerging companies in the design ecosystem to learn, network and gain access to leaders and executives from leading companies in our ecosystem. The Events and Education initiative includes the Phil Kaufman Award and is tasked with educating the member community as well as promoting the electronic system design ecosystem.

The popular quarterly Market Statistics Service (MSS) report is a valuable resource to member companies and is part of our Market Information initiative. MSS data is widely used by companies who provide products and services in the global electronic system and semiconductor design ecosystem and others that follow and track our industry. Each quarter, public and private EDA, semiconductor IP and services companies submit data in confidence to an independent auditing firm. The data is aggregated and reported in detail by product categories and geographic regions. Every report includes tables with current year-to-date revenue along with the three previous years by quarter, allowing companies to review trends affecting their specific product segments.

Be part of the organization that is driving the system design ecosystem forward. We invite you and your company to join the ESD Alliance to make a positive impact on our industry. As a member, you can participate in all that the ESD Alliance offers and in the wide range of benefits offered by SEMI.

To learn more about the ESD Alliance and our other programs and initiatives, visit the ESD Alliance website. Or, contact me at bsmith@semi.org to learn more.

If your company is already a SEMI member, becoming a member of the ESD Alliance means submitting a short application with no extra fee. If your company is not a SEMI member yet, it can apply at the same time to join the ESD Alliance. Again, no extra fee is associated with being a part of the ESD Alliance.

Meanwhile, the electronic system design ecosystem continues to grow and transform itself. It is no longer just EDA.
