Jim Hogan and Methodics’ Simon Butler: The Path from Bootstrapped Startup to Profitability

February 18th, 2020 by Bob Smith, Executive Director

Who in our community doesn’t relish a success story? That’s why we welcome Jim Hogan and his guest Simon Butler of Methodics for a lively lunchtime success story about bootstrapping a startup into profitability Friday, April 3, from noon until 1:30 p.m.

Jim, Methodics’ board member, and its Founder and CEO Simon will steer their audience through the Methodics’ trajectory and success in creating a new market segment called IP Lifecycle Management –– IPLM, for short –– targeting chip designers. They will explore Simon’s vision and reasons why San Francisco-based Methodics pursued this application space.

As an audience member, you will learn how Methodics expanded the definition of product lifecycle management (PLM) in the Enterprise Software segment into IPLM for a design-centric view of the semiconductor IP lifecycle. PLM, well-known and well-integrated within the mechanical design flow, comes up short for the semiconductor market due to the “high velocity” of semiconductor designs, with vendors struggling to deliver a solution to chip designers. As they will explain, Methodics paved PLM’s “last mile,” allowing for the completion of the “digital thread” from system design all the way to the semiconductor level. And, became profitable along the way.

If you’ve been to a Jim Hogan event in the past, you know audience participation will be encouraged.

Date: Friday, April 3, from noon until 1:30 p.m. Registration opens at 11:30 a.m. with lunch and the program beginning at noon.

Location:

SEMI

673 S. Milpitas Boulevard

Milpitas, Calif.

About Jim Hogan and Simon Butler

Jim Hogan, an experienced senior executive, has worked in the semiconductor design and manufacturing industry for more than 40 years, and serves as a board director for electronic design automation, intellectual property, semiconductor equipment, material science and IT companies.

Simon Butler, a graduate of the University of Manchester in Manchester, England, has more than 20 years of engineering experience with ICs. His background includes DSP/FFT processor core and 64bit MIPS processor development, x86 methodology consulting, and EDA tools for physical floorplanning and mixed-signal/analog layout. Previously, Butler held various technical lead and engineering management positions at High Level Design Systems (now part of Cadence), Sandcraft, Cadence and Sabio Labs (acquired by Magma, now part of Synopsys). He founded IC Methods in 2000 and co-founded Methodics in 2011.

Registration

Members of the electronic system and semiconductor design ecosystem are welcome to attend. It is open free of charge to all ESD Alliance and SEMI member companies. Non-members and guests can attend for a fee of $25. Registration information can be found at: https://bit.ly/38A8iXG

Join the ESD Alliance today!

This upcoming event is one of the many reasons for your company to become a member of the ESD Alliance and SEMI. The ESD Alliance is a Strategic Technology Community within SEMI, and you can participate in all that the ESD Alliance offers and in the wide range of benefits offered by SEMI.

If your company is already a SEMI member, becoming a member of the ESD Alliance means submitting a short application with no extra fee. If your company is not a SEMI member yet, it can apply at the same time to join the ESD Alliance. Again, no extra fee is associated with being a part of the ESD Alliance.
