Dr. Mary Jane Irwin to Receive 2019 Phil Kaufman Award

October 3rd, 2019 by Bob Smith, Executive Director

It’s a pleasure to announce Dr. Mary Jane Irwin will be honored with the 2019 Phil Kaufman Award for Distinguished Contributions to Electronic System Design. She is being celebrated for her extensive contributions to EDA through her technical efforts, service to the community and leadership. Janie is the Evan Pugh Professor and A. Robert Noll Chair Emeritus in Engineering in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Pennsylvania State University and the first woman recipient of the Phil Kaufman Award.

Service to the community and leadership is how many of us in the electronic system design ecosystem think of her. She was the DAC chair in 1999 and a member of its Executive Committee for many years serving in various capacities. In 2004, Janie received the Marie R. Pistilli Women in EDA award, another prestigious honor that recognizes individuals who helped to advance women in electronic design. The award is named for the late Marie R. Pistilli, former organizer of DAC and close friend of hers, who valued equality, diversity and acceptance. Back in 1996, she and Marie co-founded the Workshop for Women in Design Automation, now called Women in Electronic Design.

I encourage you to read the news release that offers much more about her many and varied accomplishments.

This year’s Phil Kaufman Award ceremony and dinner will be a special evening you won’t want to miss. Please join award sponsors ESD Alliance and IEEE CEDA to pay tribute to Dr. Mary Jane Irwin, the 25th Phil Kaufman Award recipient, Thursday, November 7, from 6:30pm until 9:30pm at The GlassHouse in San Jose, Calif.

Registration is open at https://bit.ly/2nPL7Go. Attendance is open to member companies at a substantial discount though you don’t need to be a member to attend. Sponsorships for the evening are available as well. Julie Rogers, our director of marketing and operations director of marketing for SEMI Americas, (jrogers@semi.org) has details.

About the Phil Kaufman Award

The Phil Kaufman Award is presented annually by the ESD Alliance and CEDA to honor individuals who have had a demonstrable impact on the field of electronic system design through technology innovations, education/mentoring, or business or industry leadership.

The award is aptly named as a way to honor the late Phil Kaufman. For those of you who didn’t know him, he was a popular and influential industry pioneer who turned innovative technologies into commercial businesses that continue to benefit electronic designers.

Last year’s recipient was Dr. Thomas W. Williams, former senior technical staff member at IBM and Synopsys’ chief scientist and Synopsys fellow, noted as the co-author with Dr. Ed Eichelberger for the paper describing Level Sensitive Scan Design.

Visit the ESD Alliance website for more information about the award, past recipients and nomination criteria.

I look forward to seeing all of you at this year’s ceremony and dinner feting Dr. Mary Jane Irwin, the first woman recipient of the Phil Kaufman Award.
