Connecting Design to Manufacturing

September 23rd, 2019 by Bob Smith, Executive Director

Greetings from Taiwan! We’ve been here for SEMICON Taiwan where 50,000 visitors Connected, Collaborated and Innovated, the theme of many SEMI events, and the Smart Data Global Summit sponsored by Cadence and Synopsys. Executives from leading electronic system design and semiconductor companies offered their perspectives on the way forward to a fully connected, intelligent world in the AI-enabled era. We also held a successful ESD Alliance Industry meeting with executives from both design and manufacturing ecosystems. It included a good deal of open discussion about common industry issues and bottlenecks that could be addressed through collaboration.

Simultaneously, I’m working on a strategic plan for the ESD Alliance that’s given me a chance to reflect on the short 13 months since we became a SEMI Strategic Association Partner. The ESD Alliance now is well integrated into the SEMI culture and we continue pursuing our mission to represent companies in the electronic system design ecosystem.

With much more of a global presence under the SEMI umbrella, our reach as the central voice of the semiconductor design industry has been amplified. This enables us to promote the electronic system design ecosystem’s value as a vital component of the global electronics product manufacturing supply chain. It’s also helping us expand our technical programs, initiatives and events.

Our move into SEMI gives the electronic system design ecosystem greater insight into the challenges and opportunities within the full semiconductor supply chain. And, we are working to give the manufacturing community similar insight into the challenges from the design ecosystem. We have much more, however, to do to reach our goal to align and connect design with manufacturing.

While design and manufacturing are part of the same semiconductor supply chain, they have been viewed historically as two separate functions pursuing different objectives with minimal overlap. The reality today is that design and manufacturing are beginning to collaborate. We have a long way to go to change perceptions and understanding. That’s why we’re about to launch an 18-month campaign to tie design more closely to manufacturing, reinforcing the reasons why the ESD Alliance became part of SEMI. We expect to encourage you to change or expand your perception of the semiconductor supply chain and the electronic system design ecosystem’s part of it. SEMI recently kicked-off its own “SEMI is More” campaign and we fully intend to leverage that message as well.

We welcome any ideas or suggestions from you to help us create on campaign to connect design to manufacturing. Please send comments to me at bsmith@semi.org.

For now, see us at Arm TechCon where we’ll be in Booth #844 October 9-10 at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, Calif. Stop by to learn more about our plan and our campaign to connect Design to Manufacturing.

We’ll be at SEMICON Europa November 12-15, 2019 in Munich, Germany, hosting the SMART Design program titled, “Designing Electronic Systems for Future Applications,” Thursday afternoon, November 14, that will include keynotes, talks and a panel.
