Like so many others in the semiconductor industry, when someone mentioned the industry organization SEMI. I thought manufacturing and large events. That was until I joined SEMI earlier this year as director of marketing for SEMI Americas. I quickly learned that SEMI is so much more than the industry perception that its sole purpose is to organize the 60 international semiconductor equipment and materials events it does each year. For starters, it has 2,000 member companies and 1.3-million individual members in regions throughout the world, 5,000 volunteers and more than 170 programs. Members have access to SEMI in-house market data reports and R&D programs chock full of relevant information to help them make better, more informed business decisions. And, we’re celebrating our 1,000th standard, an important industry milestone we reached this summer.
More than 20 technology communities make up SEMI, ranging from design, test, materials, fab operations, flexible hybrid technology, and MEMS and Sensors. Members marvel at the ability to access and collaborate with these varied communities for a wider scope and reach into the technology landscape. Of course, followers of the electronic system design industry know the ESD Alliance became a SEMI Strategic Association Partner last year. It joined other SEMI Strategic Association Partners FlexTech, focused on flexible electronics, the MEMs and Sensors Industry Group and the Fab Owners Association, and SEMI Global Partners imec, LETI Cea-Tech, IEEE and Fraunhofer. Each is chartered with serving as the central voice for their industry segment to promote its value as a vital component of the entire global electronics manufacturing supply chain. SEMI views semiconductors as a vital part of the technology revolution. Its initiatives include five vertical application platforms –– SMART Transportation, SMART Manufacturing, SMART MedTech, SMART Data and SMART IoT –– that help companies connect, collaborate and innovate. Impressively, a host of other SEMI global programs and platforms enable industry advocacy, health and safety standards, workforce development growth, and diversity and inclusion growth. Through the years, the SEMI Foundation has carried out its mission to support education and career awareness in high technology through workforce development, mentoring and a spotlight on women. SEMI provides the distinctive, authoritative and provocative voice for the industry through its thought-leadership platforms and forums to educate and create career awareness. We offer C-level engagement across the globe at its various platforms, such as the Board of Industry Leaders, Regional Advisory Boards and Think Tanks, and programs geared to high school students SEMI will commemorate its 50th anniversary next year and it has plenty to celebrate as it continues to inspire innovation through a wide spectrum of technology platforms. The worldwide SEMI ecosystem now spans from design to suppliers to system integrators, moving beyond just equipment and materials with more initiatives, new partnerships and programs to come. I invite you to engage with SEMI in our many offerings and initiatives. We couldn’t accomplish all that we do without a strong volunteer base and welcome volunteer participation.
