Now’s the chance for you and your company to help shape the electronic system and semiconductor design ecosystem as nominations open to voting member company CEOs, presidents or COOs to serve on the ESD Alliance Governing Council. Up to nine members will be elected to a two-year term. The charter of the Governing Council, formerly known as our Board of Directors, is to provide input and steer the direction of the ESD Alliance. Its role is growing, especially as our global footprint expands and we increase our initiatives with the launch of ES Design West. And yes, elections are normally on a two-year cycle. We postponed 2018 elections as we became a SEMI Strategic Alliance Partner.
Wally Rhines, CEO Emeritus of Mentor, a Siemens Business, has been a long-time member of both. In his view, “ESDA and its predecessor, EDAC, have played a unique role in the design and development ecosystem for semiconductors. It is the only organization where our industry can discuss and speak publicly with one voice concerning issues that no one company can solve by itself. It has been instrumental in influencing the direction of government export controls, minimizing the proliferation of operating systems that our companies have to support and in taking the initial actions required to curb piracy of design software. In addition, it provides a forum for emerging and established companies to share ideas and learn from one another. I’ve gained a lot from my participation and I’ve been grateful for the opportunity to participate in actions that help all of our companies grow and better serve our customers.” Dean Drako, president and CEO of IC Manage and another member of the Governing Council, agrees. “The ESD Alliance continues to serve as a central voice of our systems and semiconductor design industry. Our recent strategic partnership with SEMI enables us to utilize SEMI’s global infrastructure to further extend our reach in promoting our value in our industry’s ecosystem.” Dean is right about the value of the Governing Council. Becoming a member of the ESD Alliance’s Governing Council is not only for executives at large companies. Amit Gupta, general manager of ICVS Solido at Mentor, a Siemens Business, is a former member of the board. “In 2017, prior to Solido’s acquisition by Mentor, I joined the ESD Alliance board of directors to represent the medium and smaller vendors, and to ensure value was being delivered across the community. I enjoyed working with Bob Smith, as he did a great job re-energizing and re-branding EDAC to ESD Alliance, hosting more events, creating more marketing opportunities, and providing information on regulatory matters. The support system of the ESD Alliance helped Solido grow.” Amit added: “Now, post-acquisition, Solido gets to benefit from the many resources and opportunities a large company provides, as well as the education and exposure from the ESD Alliance. Most recently, I was invited to share my experience growing two companies from startup to successful acquisition during Jim Hogan’s ‘Crossing the Chasm: Building a Startup to a Successful Exit’ presentation series, which brought my involvement with the alliance full circle.” In addition to Wally and Dean, current Governing Council members are:
John Kibarian neatly summarizes the reason why executives from our member companies should consider running for our Governing Council. “As the semiconductor and electronics industries enter a new era driven by Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) connectivity, new challenges are emerging that span the traditional boundaries within these ecosystems. The industry needs to collaborate from front-to-back across EDA and IP companies, foundries and OSATs, and semiconductor and system vendors. Now that the ESD Alliance is part of SEMI, serving on the Governing Council provides executives with the opportunity to shape and drive the initiatives that will benefit the combined electronic and semiconductor ecosystem.” Executives from member companies can nominate themselves or be nominated by someone from within the member company. Forms are available on the ESD Alliance website. Submission deadline is Thursday, April 5. Candidate statements will be posted on the website as they are received, with elections in mid-April. Results will be announced in May. Contact Paul Cohen, senior manager at the ESD Alliance and SEMI. He can be reached at pcohen@semi.org For all those non-member companies, if the potential for an executive to be elected to the Governing Council membership is an incentive to join the ESD Alliance, please be in touch. Or, visit our website to read about our various activities and initiatives. I can be reached at: bsmith@semi.org The wait is over. The ES Design West website is live and registration is open. ES Design West will be co-located with SEMICON West 2019 at San Francisco’s Moscone Center (South Hall), July 9-11. Dedicated to promoting the commercial successes of the Design and Design Automation Ecosystem™, ES Design West is the only event in North America that links the electronic system and semiconductor design community with the electronic product manufacturing and supply chain.
