Honoring Mentor Graphics’ Wally Rhines

October 19th, 2015 by Bob Smith, Executive Director

EDAC_EDAC Connected Logo_December 2015This year’s 2015 Phil Kaufman Award Presentation and Dinner will be an exceptionally gala event. You are cordially invited to attend to help our industry honor Dr. Walden (Wally) C. Rhines, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Mentor Graphics Corporation, and celebrate all his accomplishments.

The evening, hosted by the EDA Consortium (EDAC) and the IEEE Council on EDA (CEDA), will be held Thursday, November 12, at the 4th Street Summit Center in San Jose, Calif. The reception will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the dinner and presentation commencing at 7:30 p.m.

While the selection committee received numerous nominations for well-deserving individuals, I was told that Wally Rhines’ nomination stood out. As it should. He is well known and respected throughout the EDA, IP and Semiconductor industry and is being recognized for growing the EDA and IC design industries through his efforts as a leading voice of EDA. Likewise, he is known for pioneering the evolution of IC design to SoC design.

The EDAC community in particular admires him. He has helped drive the organization to a position of leadership, creating a mechanism for the EDA industry to grow and address common issues. Perhaps most impressive is Wally’s steadfast promotion of EDA as a key enabler.

His contributions to EDAC are numerous. Wally has been a member of the EDAC Board of Directors since 1994, and served five two-year terms as EDAC’s chairman over a 16-year period from 1996 to 2012, something no one else has done. He guided the formation of our nearly 20-year old Market Statistics Service (MSS).

And in his tenure at Mentor Graphics, revenue has nearly quadrupled and Mentor has grown to achieve the industry’s number one market share solution in three of the 10 largest product segments of the EDA industry.

Wally Rhines joins a distinguished list of recipients of the the Phil Kaufman Award who have had demonstrable impact on the field of EDA through technology innovations, education/mentoring, or business or industry leadership. The award was established to honor Phil Kaufman, the late industry pioneer who turned innovative technologies into commercial businesses that have benefited electronic designers. Last year’s recipient, Dr. Lucio Lanza, managing director of Lanza techVentures, LLC, was honored for his substantial impact on EDA through his strategic and financial assistance to innovative EDA companies.

Please join us for the EDA industry’s most prestigious event of the year. Sponsors include Mentor Graphics, ARM, Cadence Design Systems, Synopsys and Harvest Management Partners. Registration will be provided by Mod Marketing. Dinner reservations are $175 per person for EDAC and IEEE members or $250 per person for non-members. A few sponsorship slots remain. A reminder that EDAC’s upcoming panel, “Patents and Patent Litigation –– Develop, Strengthen, and Protect Your Intellectual Property,” is an opportunity for executives and engineers of technology companies to get free legal advice from the experts. It will be held Thursday, October 29, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the EDA Consortium/SEMI Global Headquarters, 3081 Zanker Road, San Jose, Calif. All EDAC member companies are invited to attend free of charge. Non-EDAC members are welcome to attend as well based on space availability. To register, go to: http://conta.cc/1JyX0O3
