I could write a better tool than this piece …

You’ve had this experience, right? You are in the middle of a design, and a piece of IP turns out to be woefully inadequate, a tool blows up in your face, or you find out that a necessary piece of the flow doesn’t actually work as described. And you think, if only I had some capital, I know a few people, and we could make this work.
You probably also put that whole train of thought to bed with the realization that in this economic climate, courtesy of the unbridled arrogance of the investment banks, there isn’t a snowball’s chance of getting funding for an IP or EDA start-up. The VC have all gone to ground, even for established companies they’ve already invested in.
Maybe it’s time to think again. (OK, here comes the sales pitch part.) At DVCon next week Jim Hogan and Paul McLellan are giving a workshop titled “So you want to start an EDA company?” This is not a therapy session to separate you from delusions, nor is it a sales pitch for professional services. Rather, it is two very senior guys in the industry, with big-company chops, start-ups under their belts, VC experience, and angel investing practice between them. Jim and Paul not only know first-hand what it used to take to start a company, but they are still in the business on both the executive management and financial sides of the industry. Hogan says that this is a moment of opportunity for EDA start-ups, not a time to forget about it. And he’s in a position to know.
If you are interested, the workshop runs from 6:30 to 7:30 pm on Tuesday, 23 February, in the Oak Ballroom at the DoubleTree San Jose. The event is collocated with DVCon, but you don’t need DVCon registration to attend. You might want to drop a note to Liz Massingill to make sure you have a seat.

• “Avoid EDA classic”…“It’s really, really hard”…EDA Classic is anything in the design flow from RTL signoff to mask signoff.
• “Sizzle is the highest leverage marketing point” said Hogan. You need an exciting story in the beginning. You need to convince the world that your chosen product category is the new, new thing no large EDA player can be without. If you succeed, then the big EDA players will start to hear questions from customers and analysts about their strategy and road map in this new category.
