ESD Alliance at DAC in Austin

May 19th, 2016 by Bob Smith, Executive Director

DAC53_LongLogoThe Design Automation Conference (DAC) is only a few short weeks away and the Electronic System Design Alliance will be there in full force. We continue to be a proud DAC co-sponsor –– a distinction we’ve had since 1992 –– and we’ll have a booth on the exhibit floor again this year. I hope you’ll stop by our booth (#1920) to learn more about the Alliance, our expanded mission and new initiatives in support of the Design Ecosystem. Exhibits will be open Monday, June 6, through Wednesday, June 8, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas.

We will host a DAC Pavilion (Booth #1839) talk, “Solving the Design Cost Puzzle: How intellectual property (IP) Fits,” featuring Jim Feldhan, president of Semico Research, Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. He will address trends and issues driving the rapidly growing market for third-party IP. This follows our joint announcement in April about a cooperative marketing partnership between Semico and the ESD Alliance to work together on several business initiatives in support of the semiconductor design ecosystem.

I’d like to point out as well the Gary Smith EDA at the ESD Alliance kickoff Sunday from 5 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. in the convention center’s Ballroom D. Laurie Balch, a chief analyst for Gary Smith EDA, will open the annual reception with the 27th annual update on the state of EDA, “Extending the Bounds of EDA.” This year’s talk will focus on the challenges and opportunities facing EDA vendors, including a view of the annual EDA forecast. Laurie will look at where the industry will need to expand and how it can best address the needs of electronic product developers. She will attempt to answer the way in which future engineering requirements will impact the EDA landscape and identify growth prospects for EDA vendors. The DAC reception immediately follows.

As always, the DAC program is chockfull of topics to please the varied interests of all DAC exhibitors. It includes several DAC Pavilion talks titled, “Unscripted,” featuring members of our board of directors Lip-Bu Tan of Cadence, Aart de Geus of Synopsys and Mentor Graphics’ Wally Rhines. Another Pavilion session will be moderated by Lucio Lanza, a recently appointed board member and managing partner at Lanza techVentures. He and his panelists will explore an Open Source business model for EDA. And, Friend of the ESD Alliance Jim Hogan of Vista Ventures will moderate “Steering Safety Innovation in Autonomous Car Electronics.” I’m sure I’ve left off one or two other sessions equally noteworthy. I encourage you to visit the DAC website to see the complete program. It can be found at: www.dac.com

Finally, the ESD Alliance would like to welcome the Ridgetop Group of Tucson, Ariz., provider of advanced electronic prognostics and health management solutions for electronic systems, IP and built-in self-test solutions for critical applications. As our newest voting member, it cited several initiatives that corresponded with its needs. Those include the Semiconductor IP Working Group to develop common methodology and best practices for IP fingerprinting, the Market Statistics Service (MSS) and the Export Committee that tracks licensing and compliance issues.

Of course, I’m available to answer any questions about the ESD Alliance and how your company can become a member. Please look for me at DAC or contact me at bob@esd-alliance.org The ESD Alliance website address is: www.esd-alliance.org

See you in Austin!
