Has blogging had its day?

the-computer-demands-a-blog

This is Liz here, and I’ve happened to notice recently that many of the bloggers I follow are not as prolific as they were a year ago, when blogging was all the rage. Is it just writer’s block as Karen Bartleson bemoans (in a lighthearted way, of course) in her recent blog or is there something bigger at work here?

What say you?

In the beginning of a blog there are still many things one has been meaning to say. After expressing that backlog, the frequency of updates probably tapers off. I blog only when I have something to say, never just to say something.

So if you’re still following the same old list of bloggers, you should expect a tapering off. Look for new voices. If you can’t find them, then the list of EDA people starting blogs is tapering off.

The “post on a regular schedule” rule only makes sense for professional bloggers who want habitual readers. I just write when I have something that I feel is truly useful. I just posted a series on internationalizing OpenAccess applications, but that was after a four month hiatus.

A blog post is unnecessary for short, brief content. LinkedIn allows me to “Share an update” with my professional network, where I can be more sure they will see it. Facebook allows me to do the same with my personal network. Twitter does not serve my purposes because it only reaches a few of the people I want to reach.

I’m in basic agreement with Brad Pierce. With a new forum, a backlog of opinions burst out for many people and then they settled into a ‘steady state’.

In my own case, my energies were redirected three months ago to another relocation (to Montreal) and the crazy demands of a startup that I joined. I have only been able to issue 2-3 tweets in that time, all personal until our social media guidelines are developed (likely by me!). Tonight is an exception, as I am traveling and waiting on a delayed flight, so I have the time (and some energy!).

    Hi Liz,

Thanks for noticing:) Seriously, for me it’s been a combination of tapering off and then a whole bunch of personal family issues taking my time (and energy) away. I’m getting ready to jump back in the pool, though. See you there.

Thanks for the feedback, Brad, John, Gary & Harry. You all make good points.

It’s helpful to get the perspectives of the bloggers, themselves. And I think it points to the fact that the blogger is a fluid writer. Seems there are no “rules,” maybe just “guidelines” when it comes to blogging and social media. And that’s OK.

Harry, good to know that we will be seeing more from you. 🙂

    Liz
