Documentation on the Linux engineering platform Report this article as Inappropriate to us !!!Login to Reply

In my opinion, if Microsoft offered their office products on Linux, they would be out of the operating system business. I think the office products are how they maintain their monopoly and not the ridiculous web browser oriented business. There is a huge difference in how Microsoft products differ from EDA tools. One of the tenants of EDA tools is backward compatibility since design data has had a long life span. One of apparent strategies of Microsoft appears to be incompatibility with previous versions to force all users to upgrade. While EDA tools and users enjoy interoperability through standards and standards organizations even Unix and C have standards organizations. The open source Linux movement has in a way worked well like a standards organization. However, Microsoft has kept competition at bay for office tools by constant change of proprietary formats.

Food for thought and discussion- I want to focus on office tools, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, technical drawing, and project planning.

To the point, some topic for discussion- do you use or have you used a Linux based office suite such as Star office or Open office? What was good or bad about it? Did you experience compatibility issues?

Have you used the office tools on a windows emulator product? Have you tried one of the products that allows installation of a Microsoft OS under Linux? Was that a good solution? Have you used a product that allows Windows applications to run on a remote server and display back to your Linux display?

Even if you still have a windows box on your desk, what do you think will be the best office tool solution on Linux?

Of course, these products - Star office or Open office is good. But MS office is beyond a competition. )) So i use MS products.
