Synopsys Avant! Merger new Report this article as Inappropriate to us !!!Login to Reply

Synopsys announced yesterday that they are purchasing Avant!.

1. Do you think this is good for the industry? Is it good to have fewer bigger companies? Is it healthy for the industry to have this type of consolidation?

2. Avant! and Synopsys products for most part were not overlapping? Is it better to have a single vendor to purchase the tools from?

3. Is it good for the chip designers? Will they get a better intergrated product or will they be worse off due to potentially reduced innovation?

4. How will this merger affect Cadence and Mentor - the other two Gorillas in this market. Even though they have decent Synthesis solutions of their own, Synopsys still has most of the Synthesis market. Does better integration of Avant!/Synopsys products mean any bad news for Mentor or Cadence products integrating into the design flow with Synopsys synthesis products?

5. Has Synopsys purchased enough insurance against Cadence civil suit?

This move by Synopsys is not only good for the industry but it demonstrates good corporate citizenship and courage.

Regardless of the genesis of the technology and moral standing of Avant! leadership, the company has developed solid a solid product that has helped the cause of SOC design. If the company failed, the cost to the industry would be enormously burdensome. The acquisition moves the technology into the hands of a company with much higher ethical standards and maintains a healthy level of competition, which can only be good for the suppliers of the technology and their customers.

But the fact that Aart DeGeus was willing to risk so much to keep this technology alive and healthy speaks volumes to me about him and his company. Yes, they bought insurance against litigation, but that insurance won't pay for the man hours that will go into resolviong the morass of legal and technical issue that will arise from the acquisition. Synopsys may only break even on this deal when it all pans out.

And yet, it was the right thing to do for both the EDA and semiconductor industry. We don't often see corporate leaders do the right thing, regardless of the cost.

So, nothing counts but the technology, and of course our industry could not survive if a corrupt corporation were to fail, by this logic anything is OK because the ends justify the means. The right thing, give me a break, this is little more than laundering drug money.

Synopsys is saying that yes the technology was stolen, and yes it was a bad thing, but it's OK for us to take that stolen technology, because we are so pure. The right thing, please.
