EDACafe Industry Predictions – Mouser Electronics

January 8th, 2020 by Mark Burr-Lonnon

How do you think the electronic component industry will perform in 2020?

At Mouser Electronics, we are very optimistic about future business, particularly for our industry. We are investing in a major infrastructure expansion at our global headquarters and distribution center in Texas to be ready for the future business growth. It’s a very exciting time for us.

While manufacturing slowed in 2019, the digital revolution is still driving global demand for semiconductors and electronic components. There’s 5G, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, robotics, industrial automation and transportation — all propelling our industry to new heights. This will continue to escalate.

With the growth of IoT, there will be new technologies introduced from our manufacturers around sensor technologies; the latest in power management; and of course, advancements in the microprocessors. Automotive, factory and home automation also will continue to be emerging markets as more technologies are introduced to make factories, homes and vehicles smarter and safer.

What trends or shifts have you identified and predict will continue into next year? How will lead times perform in 2020?

Looking back a little bit, 2018 was a record year for the industry, and for Mouser, thanks to a strong global demand for electronic components across all product categories. By contrast, 2019 was a challenge, particularly with the economic slowdown in China and Europe. Demand has slowed, which has allowed lead times to catch up.

Because of our business model and vast inventory (stocking over one million different components from more than 800 manufacturers), we actually benefit from most product shortages because customers know they can secure parts from Mouser.

We have the widest selection of inventory ready for same-day shipment in the industry. If demand stays flat, then lead times shouldn’t be much of an issue in early 2020. However, with the onset of 5G technology, we are expecting the semiconductor industry to improve next year, benefiting from increased need for components for wireless, mobile and telecommunications-related devices.

Why Buy Authorized?

It has never been more important to purchase through an authorized global distributor like Mouser, a top 10 global distributor. Whether customers are buying online or through one of our customer service representatives, we have the professionals and procedures in place to ensure an effective and efficient supply chain, free of counterfeit or gray market products. At Mouser, we strive every day to achieve a strong balance of speed and efficiency to consistently provide our customers with best-in-class service — it is part of our culture.

Furthermore, every component we sell is traceable to and authorized from the manufacturer. For support, our product microsites provide detailed technical information, including datasheets and product lifecycle information. Our Services and Tools page makes it easy for customers to search for products, personalize their orders and access their previous purchases 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Customers can also take advantage of our advanced BOM tool, FORTE, as well as our ECAD design tool and our inventory management tool. Additionally, our highly trained service professionals are there to help customers with their needs.
