No matter that the whole intent of your industry is to port more and more facets of our lives into the digital realm, learning and networking are still best done on human terms, starting and ending with a handshake. It turns out people like to talk to each other face-to-face, and hear from their colleagues in live settings whenever possible. Listed below are numerous chances to do just that.
CDNLive is proof positive that users like to meet other users in person; the company took this long-running users conference on-line for several years after establishing it as a brick-and-mortar show. The on-line version was never as successful, so it reverted to its original human-interface format. Clearly that’s been a successful formula as the far-flung venues prove there’s demand for the conference content. Each version also includes a Designer Expo. * Mentor Forum 2017 – August 31 – Seoul This Forum is all about Speed. The 4 tracks include: The Speed of Trust; The Speed of Automotive Realization; The Speed at the Edge; IOT & Agility; The Speed of Validation and Optimization. This is all really zippy stuff, so you should be making haste to register. You can’t attend if you don’t. * EDI Con 2017 – September 11-13 – Boston Per organizers: “EDI CON USA is first industry event in the USA to bring together RF, microwave, EMC/EMI, and high-speed digital design engineers and system integrators for networking, product demonstrations, training, and learning opportunities. Got a design challenge? Bring it to EDI CON USA and ask your peers and industry experts about it. Chances are, you’ll come away with an entirely new perspective on the problem, and some immediate ways to move forward.” * TSMC OIP Ecosystem Forum – September 13 & November 7 – Santa Clara & Shenzhen TSMC throws a huge shadow in the EDA industry; it’s not beyond imagining that Cadence or Synopsys would be bought someday by the company. For now, TSMC continues to inspire [command] that EDA and IP tools meet their manufacturing specificities. Hence, this by-invitation-only conference offers an important opportunity for TSMC’s “eco-system companies and customers to share practical, tested solutions to today’s design challenges.” Discussion will include “node design challenges including 7nm, 10nm, 12FFC, 16FFC, 16nm FinFET+, 22ULP, 28nm, and ultra-low power process technologies.” * EDPS 2017 – September 21-22 – Milpitis The Electronic Design Processes (EDP) 2017 Workshop and Symposium on Efficient Design and Manufacturing, in its 24th year, fosters the free exchange of ideas among the top thinkers, movers, and shakers who focus on how chips and systems are designed in the electronics industry. You can learn more here and register here. Sponsors include Mentor, Ansys, Intel, Solido, CEDA, Semi, and IEEE EPS. * ARC Processor Summit 2017 – September 26 – Santa Clara Synopsys acquired ARC in 2010, hence speaks with authority: “As embedded systems become more complex and integrate greater functionality, SoC developers are faced with the challenge of developing more powerful but also more energy-efficient devices. The processors used in these embedded applications must be efficient to deliver high levels of performance within limited power and silicon area budgets.” At this summit, Synopsys says attendees will learn “about the latest technologies and trends in embedded processor IP, software, programming tools and applications.” It’s free with registration. * 2017 IEEE Photonics Conference – October 1-5 – Florida Per Nikola Alic, IPC Technical Program Chair: “It is my distinct pleasure to extend this invitation to all who are drawn to the science and engineering of light to attend the 2017 IEEE Photonics Conference. 2017 marks an important milestone in the history of IPC as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the conference. It’s fitting to commemorate the evolution of IPC at this time when photonics has emerged as one of the main technological pillars of modern society. Together with the members of the organizing committee we are making every effort to ensure the conference retains its technical preeminence, but becomes more impactful and more engaging through exciting plenary talks and special events. Indeed, there is little excuse not to join us and attend the conference.” * MATLAB Expo 2017 – October 4, 27, November 7 – UK, Japan, US It’s great to see the MATHWORKS User Conference on the list, as this often unsung Elephant in the Room is so pivotal to electronic system design. Organizers say the conference brings together “engineers, researchers, and scientists to hear real-world examples, get hands-on demonstrations, and learn more about the latest features and capabilities of MATLAB and Simulink.” The events are free to all, but do require registration. (Kudos to visionary MATHWORKS for sponsoring Citizen & Student Scientists in their research efforts around the August 2017 Solar Eclipse.) * Decoding Formal Club Meeting – October 11 – Santa Clara Sponsored by Oski Technology and Synopsys, the Decoding Formal Club is a forum for “formal enthusiasts, pioneers, leaders and colleagues who work to promote the sharing of ideas, advancement of formal technology, and adoption of formal sign-off within the industry.” Past meetings have included senior technologists from a variety of industry leaders. This time around, it’s AMD, Qualcomm, and Oski. * ARM TechCon 2017 – October 24-26 – Santa Clara Now as prominant as DAC in providing a showcase for both established and emerging tech players, ARM TechCon comes again to Silicon Valley. Per organizers, there will be 8 different program tracks, 100+ speakers, 60+ hours of content, and lots of opportunity to meet other software and hardware engineers and their managers. As evidence of the importance of ARM to EDA and vice-versa, Mentor, Cadence, and Synopsys are all sponsors, as is our own EDACafe, among others. * ICCAD 2017 – November 13-16 – Irvine In case you didn’t already know, conference organizers offer 3 reasons for you to attend this long-running EDA-centric conference: 1) You can network with old and new friends. 2) ICCAD is a premier format for exploring design challenges, solutions, and future road maps. 3) The presentations are in-depth and focus on innovation rather than established strategies. Ergo, sponsors include Sigda, CEDA, CAS, and IEEE EDS.
