SAME Forum: Startup Panel showcases promising organizations, ideas

October 11th, 2012 by Peggy Aycinena

Once again this year, SAME Forum in Sophia Antipolis demonstrated what it does best: Bring technologists together in a collegial atmosphere to discuss and debate the latest trends in technology. Always a key part of the agenda, this year’s Startup Panel was even better than the 2011 event because it was held in the several hours before cocktails and the conference dinner.

Moderated by Intel’s Steven Klinger from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on October 2nd, six companies had the opportunity to stand up in front of an SRO crowd of over 100 to describe their ideas, vision, and business plans. At the end of the two hours, a panel of judges met to determine which of the six companies would receive the annual Most Promising Startup Award. In the eyes of many, however, just appearing on the panel was reward enough.

Following the two hours of presentations, the Startup company representatives had a chance to sit and talk one-on-one at tables near the cocktails and hors d’oeuvres with those interested in their nascent product offerings. It was an ebullient event full of substantive conversation, start to finish.

The 6 companies showcased this year in Sophia Antipolis included, listed in the order of their 20-minute presentations:

ADACSYS [France]: Specializes in FPGA-based High Performance Computing Solutions with patented technology. Eric Hochapfel presented.

XYverify [U.S.]: Integrates wireless location information into mobile payment and location-authentication protocols for geolocation determination and verification using cloud-based cell-tower triangulation. Elliot Klein presented.

Space Codesign Systems [Canada]: Supplies ESL software for designing embedded systems using new hardware/software co-design technology with true development parallelism. Gary Dare presented.

ProximusDA [Germany]: Provides tools for system-level architects, verification engineers, and embedded software developers dealing with the challenges of heterogeneous distributed computing on SoCs. Phillipe Metsu presented.

ZettICE [France]: Developing flexible generators of FPGA and ASIC IP for complex applications ranging from linear algebra to multimedia domains. Alexander Plesco presented.

Lift Design Automation [France]: Developing EDA software to enable IC designers to explore design feasibility of heterogeneous systems and examine trade-offs in performance and other specification metrics. A spin-out of the CREALYS incubation eco-system.

From this panel of six companies, a jury of 8 technologists and journalists chose to award the 2012 Most Promising Startup to ADACSYS. ARM CTO Mike Muller presented the blown-glass trophy during the SAME Forum dinner later on the evening of October 2nd.

He commented upon making the award that new ideas and energetic technologists are indeed the life-blood of the microelectronics industry everywhere in the world. Those lucky enough to enjoy the SAME Forum conference dinner did not disagree in the slightest.
