By, Lucio Lanza Managing Partner, Lanza techVenturesSeismic Change for the Semiconductor Industry in 2023 The computer era is coming to a close after 40 years of productivity and efficiency improvements that forever changed our lives. The emerging computerized society will have an even more profound and transformative effect than the Industrial Revolution, starting with the way we communicate with each other. Physical proximity is no longer a consideration as the digital world intersects the physical world, fashioning a digital society that will expand our boundaries and curiosity in ways we haven’t begun to imagine. As Moore’s Law slow down, the need for a variety of innovative solutions has never been greater.
Consumers’ behavior is changing, too, transforming the healthcare system as they use technology and apps to stay better informed about their health. The pandemic accelerated this push into medical technology or MedTech with new applications in drug discovery and therapeutics and is ready for even more innovative solutions from the semiconductor industry. Analytical power at the edge with miniaturized remote and intelligent computational engines, for example, can redefine how consumers interact with the medical community, upending the conventional hospital-centric medical care system. The concept of remote healthcare will evolve significantly and rapidly, expanding MedTech’s reach for better efficiencies and communication between consumer and healthcare professionals. The impact on the medical field is one of the consequences created by the innovation coming from the open-source silicon movement that now will be built on community-based, open-source platforms. This will totally change the reach of technology by enabling easy-to-access, easy-to-use tools and methodologies, therefore democratizing chip design that began in earnest in 2022. Chiplets will have an increasing role as high-density designs become less costly, more viable solutions and reaching out more broadly. This powerful dynamic will pick up speed in 2023 with a host of chip solutions for new applications in new markets with MedTech being just one of them. The community of designers will expand exponentially and develop their basic expertise in driving new semiconductor industry growth. As a result, 2023 will be the bellwether for the seismic change coming to the semiconductor industry ecosystem.
