Growth in FPGA market is fueled by its growing end applications in many industries where they provide unique advantages of flexibility, low-latency and security to meet complex and evolving requirements. Data Centres- FPGAs finds application in Data Centres for offloading computing from CPU and accelerate certain functionalities to improve throughput and response time. FPGAs are also being deployed for machine learning applications in Data Centres. The dramatic shift in workplace norms during pandemic and resulting demand for digital and cloud infrastructure is driving the Data Centre market. Construction of new data Centre is underway along with increased investment in edge to support the post-pandemic normal. The need for lower latency at the edge in healthy buildings, smart cities, distributed energy resources, and 5G will also fuel FPGA market. Autonomous Vehicles and ADAS- Real-time processing, safe and secure against cyber-attacks along with low-power consumptions are the key requirement for autonomous vehicle. Flexible IO and high data rate are also required to enable real-time processing of huge data from multiple sensors. FPGAs are very well suitable for meeting the complex and continuously evolving computing requirement of ADAS and autonomous driving segment. They can be used for both edge and central hub functions of the ubiquitous LiDAR units in AD applications. IoT & 5G – Security is a big concern in IoT networks given the increasing number and size of cyberattacks against IoT devices. Edge computing will become increasingly part of the IoT services and solutions. Rising Adoption of 5G technology impacts positively IoT world as well but the chip shortage will halt many IoT projects and hinder the sector growth. Developments in 5G infrastructure are anticipated to drive growth in the FPGA market. In a 5G Open Radio Access Network (RAN), many Central Units (CUs) are connected with Direct Unit and at DU the throughput of 100Gbps is easily reached. Using CPU for performing all security functions is inefficient and it can create bottleneck at DU. FPGAs are superior alternative for offloading tasks like encryption/decryption and IPSec. They also find applications in remote radio heads for massive MIMO, baseband, and wireless backhaul systems. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning- The need for real-time computing and decision-making becomes more critical in today’s complex networks. Accelerated AI adoption would be the need of hour to optimize the performance of these networks. FPGA based AI accelerator would play important part in both edge and cloud solutions and services FPGAs shortages are being experienced worldwide though not all manufacturers are equally affected as some devices have shorter waiting time. Automotive semiconductor have become 5 times costly after the pandemic. Other end applications sectors are also under the shadow of chip shortage and growth will halt or hamper in 2022 and likely to pick towards the end of 2022 or in 2023 when the shortage is expected to be over.
