The Six Semiconductor: Innovating Memory Interface IP in the AI Era

August 8th, 2024 by Sanjay Gangal

In the rapidly evolving landscape of semiconductor technology, The Six Semiconductor Inc., a subsidiary of Open Edge Technology Inc., has emerged as a significant player, particularly in the realm of high-speed memory interface intellectual property (IP). Founded by a group of seasoned engineers with deep ties to the semiconductor industry, the company is capitalizing on the growing demands of artificial intelligence (AI) to carve out a niche in a highly competitive market.

Origins Rooted in Experience

The story of The Six Semiconductor began six years ago, when a close-knit team of engineers, all former colleagues from ATI Technologies (later absorbed by AMD), identified an opportunity in the burgeoning AI sector. At a time when AI was starting to reshape the tech industry, the founders saw an increasing demand for specialized IP to support the intensive memory needs of AI accelerators.

“We recognized that the AI boom was not just a temporary trend, but a paradigm shift that required new, robust infrastructure,” said Ricky Lau, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of The Six Semiconductor. “With our collective experience in high-speed memory interface design, we knew we could meet this need.”

The company’s initial focus was on developing GDDR6 IP, which is crucial for AI processors that require vast amounts of memory bandwidth. Drawing on their deep expertise in GPU design from their days at AMD, the team was able to push the boundaries of performance, setting their IP apart from existing standards.

Exceeding Industry Standards

The Six Semiconductor’s GDDR6 IP was designed to outperform the industry benchmark. While the standard performance target for GDDR6 memory was set at 16 Gbps, The Six Semiconductor set its sights higher, achieving speeds of up to 20 Gbps. This leap in performance, combined with a focus on power efficiency—leveraging design techniques honed over years of developing GPUs and mobile processors—has made their offering one of the most advanced in the industry.

But GDDR6 is only the beginning. The Six Semiconductor has expanded its portfolio to include IP for other memory standards, including LPDDR5x, HBM3, and DDR5. This broad array of offerings underscores the company’s commitment to providing versatile solutions tailored to the diverse needs of modern computing.

While details about their clients remain under wraps, it’s clear that The Six Semiconductor’s technology is being considered by some of the biggest names in the tech world. “We’re in discussions with several tier-one companies,” Lau noted, underscoring the strategic importance of their IP in high-volume production environments.

A Strategic Partnership

A critical element of The Six Semiconductor’s strategy is its close partnership with Open Edge Technology. As a subsidiary, The Six Semiconductor benefits from Open Edge’s focus on memory controller IP and network-on-chip IP, which, when combined with The Six Semiconductor’s PHY IP, creates a comprehensive memory subsystem solution.

“This collaboration allows us to offer a complete, optimized memory solution,” Lau explained. “By integrating these components under one roof, we can ensure maximum performance, power efficiency, and silicon area savings—advantages that are hard to match.”

Looking to the Future

The Six Semiconductor is not resting on its laurels. The company is actively expanding its IP portfolio to cover new memory standards, aiming to stay ahead in a field where technological advances are relentless. Their recent partnership with Semifive, a platform and service solution company in South Korea, highlights their global ambitions. Together, they are developing next-generation LPDDR6 IP, which will be integrated into Semifive’s chiplet platform, further broadening The Six Semiconductor’s impact on the industry.

As the semiconductor landscape continues to evolve, The Six Semiconductor is positioning itself as a key contributor to the infrastructure supporting AI and other cutting-edge technologies. With a strong foundation in high-speed memory interface design and a clear strategy for growth, the company is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of computing.
