Bttn Dramatically Expands Addressable Market for its IoT Universal Push-button via SIGFOX

SIGFOX ReadyTM Certification Assures Out-of-the-Box Connectivity With Optimal Radio Capacity for Innovative Internet Push Button

HELSINKI, Finland – May 28, 2015 – Bttn Inc., the creator of the simplest physical internet user interface in the world has chosen SIGFOX’s global network to dramatically expand the reach of its buttons.

Until now GPRS and Wi-Fi technologies have been used to connect bttn, the world’s first stand-alone, connected push button to the Internet. By qualifying its device in the SIGFOX ReadyTM certification program, Bttn is assured the buttons will have optimal radio capacity wherever SIGFOX’s cost-effective, energy-efficient global network is operating.

“SIGFOX’s network, which is dedicated to the Internet of Things, allows us to build buttons that have better battery lifetime and a much lower cost,” said Harri Rautio, CEO of Bttn. “Furthermore, SIGFOX has strong network presence in countries like Spain and France, where we already have business customers in the transportation, elderly care, security and manufacturing industries. SIGFOX’s network connectivity adds a great feature to our great product.”

Unlike systems that are still in the development stage, SIGFOX’s Ultra Narrow Band (UNB) technology for connecting devices provides scalable, long-range, two-way connectivity and very high capacity.  The network complements existing high-bandwidth cellular systems, which are designed for the data-intensive needs of smartphones and other mobile electronics. It installs on standard cell towers and provides economical, energy-efficient transmission of small quantities of data over long distances, thus lowering barriers to wide implementation of IoT and M2M solutions, and greatly extending the battery and service life of connected devices.

"The rapidly expanding SIGFOX network, accessible through a simple subscription-based model, is a springboard for IoT companies like Bttn, because it allows them to distribute their out-of-the-box connected devices wherever the SIGFOX network is deployed,” said Thomas Nicholls, executive vice president of communications at SIGFOX. “We’re excited to see an on-demand signaling device such as bttn becoming SIGFOX Ready™ and we are convinced that the large SIGFOX ecosystem will find many uses for this innovative product, whose possibilities are almost endless.”

Jari Leminen, chief engineer at Bttn, said implementing SIGFOX’s chipset into bttn, to become SIGFOX Ready™, was fast and simple. “It was basically plug-and-play, changing the GPRS and Wi-Fi chipsets, without a need to re-design other hardware components,” he explained. “For us, the development effort took less than a month.”
