SEMICON Europa to Provide Access and Opportunity into €100 Billion European Semiconductor Strategy

Top Policy Makers, Consortia Leaders, Buyers Convene in Dresden to Plan and Execute €100 Billion European Industry Acceleration

DRESDEN, Germany — 1 July 2013 — Leading policy makers, consortia leaders, and buyer/specifiers from leading semiconductor, MEMS and other microelectronics industries will convene at SEMICON Europa on October 8-10 in Dresden, Germany to plan next steps in Europe’s ambitious new €100 billion semiconductor manufacturing strategy. Implementation has already started, with European Commission announcing last month the launch of five major projects to boost European microelectronics manufacturing competitiveness involving over €700 million in European Commission, Member State and industry funding.  This was the beginning of a wave of investment to be launched in the coming months to years to regain market share for manufacturing in Europe.  According to the SEMI Worldwide Fab Forecast, semiconductor equipment spending will double in Europe next year, from US$ 2.4 billion to over $5 billion in 2014. SEMICON Europa will serve as next step in information, engagement and opportunity for this major investment in long-term manufacturing competiveness in Europe.

SEMICON Europa 2013 will devote programs led by industry experts on each of the major projects, including 450mm wafer processing, power electronics, MEMS, and FDSOI.  The SEMICON Europa Executive Summit will provide attendees insights into EU investment priorities and program participation.

Over 40 programs with speakers from nearly 40 leading European fabs will provide the latest trends, technologies, and processes in advanced semiconductor manufacturing, including test, advanced packaging and 3D-IC, lithography, metrology and more.  SEMICON Europa will feature the 17th annual Fab Manager Forum, the leading information and networking platform for advanced semiconductor manufacturing and again will co-locate with the 2013 Plastics Electronics Conference and Exposition, Europe’s premier event focusing on the latest developments in printed, organic and large area electronics.

“The European Commission’s aggressive support of the microelectronics industry represents a major turning point for the region and a new level of business opportunity for suppliers,” said Heinz Kundert, president of SEMI Europe.  “Nearly $6 billion in equipment and materials will be spent this year alone by the European semiconductor industry, and with these announcements, this will significantly increase in 2014 and 2015.

“SEMICON Europa will be the hot spot to figure out how to become part of the €10 billion EU funded programs; €100 billion private funding and 20 percent share of world chip manufacturing by 2020.”
