I would say Intel has clearly given way to AMD in the high-performance sector. Which is all the more obvious with their recent architecture change which is essentially equal to the Opteron architecture. It is probably obvious that this was necessary for Intel since software vendors were not too eager to support the 64bit Intel architecture. In my own experience I have only compared Opteron and Sparc machines, with the Opteron a clear winner.
