Why does Linux not have hybrid shutdown though? (I believe that's what Windows itself calls fast boot) As long as you have a little bit of confidence in your system, there should be no reason to ever fully shut down.

About X, would Wayland improve performance here? I've had GNOME 3.18 run under Wayland, but since Plank (the dock) didn't work in it I quickly abandoned it.

Another reason I don't like GRUB is it doesn't support touch. That LITERALLY means I cannot boot a non-default operating system on my Surface unless I have a keyboard connected - WOW! that's just 1960's computing. How is GRUB the best we have? Even Windows' own boot loader supports mouse and touch, and that thing is barebones.  Cool
