Mentor Graphics Wasting Your Money Report this article as Inappropriate to us !!!Login to Reply

Did you even wonder why Mentor Graphics license and support cost was so high?  Have you even been to a Mentor Graphics office NOT in the high rent district?

Well in these hard times Mentor going one step farther.

Even though Mentor is having a hard time meeting their yearly numbers, in January 2009 , Mentor will spend thousands on a big party in San Antonio.  In these times with Mentor's customers cutting costing and laying-off staff, one cannot believe Mentor going to show its customer how much they have been overcharged by have a big alcoholic sales party.  How much does it cost be rent a hotel and fly people to SA from all over the world?

What about their conference calls and web options or is that just reserved for customers?

My company is trying to decide between getting a Mentor license and laying-off an engineer or doing without the license and keeping the engineer.

I am not mad at Mentor. I am mad at Mentor's decision to have a party instead to giving their loyal customers a break.

I wonder how much the cost of licenses could be reduced just by saving the cost of airfare to Texas.

Since Mentor is not immune to hard times (I was told they are not meeting the sales goals) why aren't they concerned about spending this money?  Is Mentor's Execs so isolated they do not know this party will be bad for their image?

The "party" you mentioned is more than likely the annual Sales Kick-Off meeting that Mentor Graphics has every year.  As a former Mentor employee who has attended these events in the past I can tell you that this is not a frivolous expenditure but is used to coordinate and maximize the sales and marketing efforts for the year.

The amount of money that Mentor would save by not having the meeting would have a very minor effect on the price of a license if the savings was passed on to the consumer and would not alleviate the choice your company has to make.  The amount of money that Mentor would lose by not having the meeting (and thereby not having the opportunity to coordinate the sales and marketing effort) probably greatly exceeds the cost of having the meeting (I would assume that somebody at Mentor corporate did a cost-benefits analysis).

I've worked at Mentor Graphics and other EDA companies since 1986 and all of them have an annual sales meeting to:

  • Rally the sales and AEs

  • Present the product directions

  • Discuss competitors

  • Present technology roadmaps

  • Hear from the field about what's really happening at accounts

  • Build trust between field and factory

  • Be entertained

The "face time" is hard to replace with web-cams and conferencing.
