Point-of-Load power supplies usually involve an Intermediate Bus Architecture (IBA) to deal with the lower voltages now present in many systems. POLs are non-isolated converters that accept power inputs from isolated dc-dc converters. This configuration can be less costly because the non-isolated POLs are less expensive than isolated dc-dc converters. The POL dc-dc converter is usually found in a small non-brick package, such as an SIP or SMT (surface-mount technology) module.
