A prime example of a multiple output centralized supply is the ubiquitous "silver box," which has been used since the beginning of the PC era. It is a multiple output supply with 5V and ±12V outputs. Lower voltage supplies derived from the 5Vare obtained from board-mounted circuits. However, when processors move to voltages near 1V and clock speeds over 2GHz, the silver box may be on its way out, being replaced by a distributed power system. This new system will probably have a 12V front end and point-of-load dc-dc converters that produce 5V and below.
