AC adapters are a cost effective and relatively fast way to provide a power source for computer peripherals without having to go through power supply safety and EMI qualification tests. That is, an OEM can purchase these adapters "off-the-shelf" and does not have to design and qualify the supply, which provides a time-to-market advantage.
