Posted anew every four weeks or so, the EDA WEEKLY delivers to its readers information concerning the latest happenings in the EDA industry, covering vendors, products, finances and new developments. Frequently, feature articles on selected public or private EDA companies are presented. Brought to you by EDACafe.com. If we miss a story or subject that you feel deserves to be included, or you just want to suggest a future topic, please contact us! Questions? Feedback? Click here. Thank you!

The other critical elements of Web Services are:
SOAP - Simple Object Access Protocol, a lightweight XML-based messaging protocol

WSDL - Web Services Descritpion Language, an XML-formatted language used to describe a Web service's capabilities as collections of communication endpoints capable of exchanging messages.

UDDI - Universal Descritpion Discovery and Integration, A Web-based distributed directory that enables businesses to list themselves on the Internet and discover each other, similar to a traditional phone book's yellow and white pages.
Web Services describe a standardized way of integrating Web-based applications. XML is used to tag the data, SOAP to transfer the data, WSDL to describe the available services and UDDI to list the available services. Web services share business logic, data and processes through a programmatic interface across a network.

EDA Vendors

Limited Surfing attempts to locate XML-based tools from EDA vendors yielded only a pair (apologizes to those I missed). Electronic Tools Company or etools has developed an XML Document Type Definition called EdaXML.dtd that covers schematics, connectivity, PCB and MCM. The firm offers XML as well as EDIF translators for PCB data from Mentor (Design Architect and Boardstation), Cadence (OrCAD and Concept Schematic Capture), PADS, P-CAD and Viewlogic (Powerview/Worldview). The firm also offers an EdaXML viewer. Platform Express from Mentor Graphics is an XML-based design tools that facilitates the creation and verification of designs containing IP from multiple sources.
Mentor offers an XML editor that reads VHDL and Verilog IP to create Platform Express XML. Given the momentum behind XML as a basis for data exchange outside the EDA industry, the number of XML-based or XML-supporting products is likely to grow. However, XML is not appropriate for the enormous file sizes (10's or 100's GB) found in our industry.
