The Yahara devices are designed specifically for the highly-integrated, low cost and low power requirements of Multi-Service Transport, Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and Metro/Core switch router applications. The family of devices represents AMCC’s fifth generation of integrated local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), and optical transport network (OTN) silicon solutions.
The Yahara product family builds on the success of AMCC’s MetrON product family by extending Edge and Metro Carrier Ethernet features into Metro and Long Haul Optical Network applications. By providing additional modes of 10G to OTU-2 mapping features and incorporating a second 10G Phy into the Yahara product line, AMCC provides telecom original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with unmatched levels of power, space and cost savings for OTU-2 transponder and regenerator applications.
As carrier service providers continue their migration away from traditional SONET/SDH based services to lower cost 10G optical services, Yahara enables telecom OEMs to build flexible and cost-effective platforms to map exploding volumes of Ethernet traffic directly onto optical transport networks. By offering three packages supporting 10G “AnyRate” protocols, the Yahara is ideally suited for a variety of blade applications including 10G client/line cards, 10G transponders/muxponder cards, 10G regenerator cards, and 40G to 100G muxponder applications.
“The 10G market is marked by rapid technology transitions, which often results in large shifts in vendor share. The market for 10G PHY is in a rapid technology transition and several vendors are vying to establish an early leadership position,” said Jag Bolaria, Principal Analyst with The Linley Group. “AMCC's Yahara product family integrates a compelling array of functions that match up well with the needs of next generation telecommunications platforms, carrier Ethernet switches, and router applications. With Yahara, AMCC is positioning itself to capitalize as the transition to optical technology expands into the Metro and Long-Haul networks.”
The Yahara product family integrates 10GbE/10G Fibre Channel (FC)/8G FC/OC-192/STM-64 to OTU-2 mapping services, FracN clock synthesizing circuitry, Electronic Dispersion Compensation (EDC), GFEC/Enhanced FEC, and 10G serdes functions in a single device. By eliminating the need for various external phys and interface bridge devices Yahara devices enable telecom OEMs to reduce 10G Optical Transport Unit-2 (OTU-2) transponder and regenerator line card power and space requirements by up to 56% and 81%, respectively.
“The Yahara product family enables our customers to provide carriers with best-in-class 10G client mapping services for 10G/OTU-2 Multi-Service Transport solutions at an extremely cost-effective price,” said Sandeep Gupta, Vice President, Engineering and Marketing for transport products at AMCC. ”Each of the Yahara devices are specifically designed to address unique requirements in the 10-Gigabit transport marketplace. The product line demonstrates AMCC’s intellectual property portfolio and ability to develop highly integrated mixed signal solutions for the optical transport network market.”
The Yahara S10123 is designed for 10G OTU-2 client/line tributary Metro Ethernet and Switch/Router applications. Its flexible system interface supports XAUI/SFI4.P2/SFI-5s protocols and enables the direct connection to network processors, 10G Ethernet switches, 10G framers and 10G MACs. Yahara’s 10G line XFI interface enables the direct connection to XFP and SFP+ optic modules. This enables telecom OEMs to realize significant power, space and cost savings with the elimination of external Phys. The Yahara S10123 is packaged in a 19x19 sqmm plastic ball grid array.
The Yahara S10124 contains a robust set of interfaces which provides design flexibility for Multi-Service Transport and DWDM platforms. A XAUI/SFI4.P2/SFI-5s system interface and a dedicated 10G XFI line interface supports a separate and dedicated 10G XFI client interface as well as a 16-bit parallel SFI4.P1 interface providing flexibility for use on either the client or line side of the device. The S10124 is ideal for 10G OTU-2 client/line tributary cards, transponder and regenerator applications and supports 10G XFP/SFP+ and 10G MSA modules. In addition, the S10124’s rich set of interfaces enables customers to enhance differentiating features such as encryption and unique mappings which enable telecom OEMs to support both future and legacy carrier optical network requirements. The S10124 is packaged in a 25x25 plastic ball grid array.
The Yahara S10126 device is designed for the optical networking industry’s continuing migration to small form factor serial 10G optic modules and 10G serial backplanes. It is packaged in a 19x19 plastic ball grid array and supports two serial 10G interfaces that are XFP/SFP+ module compliant, enabling a small footprint solution for 10G Transponder applications, serial 10G backplane applications, and 10x100G muxponder applications.
The entire Yahara family supports a 10G GMP mapping mode that enables 10G Client signals to be mapped into a generic ODU-2 frame at a common clock rate that can feed a 100G muxponder device. This mapping feature provides a clean and easily routable interface to both the client side XFP/SFP+ optic module and to the100G muxponder device.
Integrated ITU G.709 FEC (GFEC) and AMCC’s Enhanced FEC (ITU G.975.1.I4) allows the Yahara product family to enable Metro and Long Haul transmission of 10GbE over OTN networks in low Optical Signal Noise Ratio [OSNR] environments. In addition, the GFEC and AMCC’s Enhanced FEC features compensate for channel impairments, enabling narrow channel spacing of 25Ghz for DWDM systems. The Yahara white paper offers more information about applications supported by the Yahara product family, including support for 40G and 100G transport networks.
The Yahara product family is industrial temperature compliant (-40oC to 85oC) and will begin sampling to alpha customers in 2Q09.
