A worldwide growth in rich media content such as video downloads and peer-to-peer communications, coupled with the growing adoption of broadband services such as PON, 3G/4G mobile and WiMAX, have created the need to rapidly scale network throughputs and capacity for carrier core, metro, access aggregation and data center networks. Leading service providers such as AT&T, Comcast and Verizon Communications have announced early initiatives to test new 100G technologies over their existing networks. The respective best-in-class solutions from Xilinx and NetLogic Microsystems support the draft specification of the IEEE 802.3ba 100Gb/s and 40Gb/s Ethernet Task Force, whose OEM members include Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco Systems, Force10 Networks, Fujitsu, Huawei Technologies, Juniper Networks and Nortel Networks.
“Key growth vectors like video-intensive IP traffic and the media-rich content being generated around social networking websites, coupled with data center convergence around Ethernet and FCoE is driving the need for higher bandwidth Ethernet pipes in data center, metro edge and core networks,” said John D’Ambrosia, IEEE P802.3ba 40G/100G Ethernet Task Force chair, and senior scientist at Force10 Networks. “This multi-vendor demonstration organized by NetLogic Microsystems to showcase its 100G PHY ICs demonstrates the feasibility of merchant PHY, MAC, optics and test solutions for 100GE. This will enable switch and router OEM system integrators to start the task of building and testing tomorrow’s Ethernet networks.”
NetLogic Microsystems’ NLP10142 100GE PHY solution features a groundbreaking architecture and advanced circuit technologies to deliver the highest 100GE density, superior jitter performance and lower power consumption. The NLP10142 PHY solution seamlessly connects to the Xilinx Virtex-5 TXT device, and supports 100Gbps transmissions over at least 40km on single-mode fiber (SMF) cabling, at least 100m on OM3 multi-mode fiber (MMF), or at least 10m over a copper cable assembly. Furthermore, the NLP10142 solution will be offered in lead-free packaging, to allow customers to develop environmental-friendly system solutions that comply with certain green-initiative regulations.

Aimed at spurring innovation and growth in the 40GE and 100GE market, Xilinx’s Virtex-5 TXT devices with a uniform architecture of up to 48 high-speed transceivers with full hardware PCS offer the only single-chip solution with built-in flexibility and re-programmability to scale as 40GE and 100GE hardware requirements and standards mature, while delivering the 600Gbps total bandwidth required today to build network bridges such as 100GbE to 120Gbps Interlaken, 40Gbps Quad XAUI to 50Gbps Interlaken, OC-768 to OTU-3, and SFI-5 to 4xSFI4.2 In addition, the Virtex-5 TXT devices are designed to improve signal integrity and lower power consumption for reliable operation of 10/100Gbps links, and are fully supported with application-specific IP, development tools and reference designs for implementing high-bandwidth protocol bridging. Hardware enhancements unique to Xilinx transceivers reduce the size of the 100GE and Interlaken cores by over 20%.
