Semtech Debuts Industry's First Dual-Channel Step-Down Controller for DrMOS Power Devices

CAMARILLO, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—February 26, 2007— Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices, computers and industrial equipment, today announced the SC2447, the industry's first DC-DC step-down (buck) controller for DrMOS power devices.

The SC2447 is a 1MHz synchronous PWM buck controller designed to drive DrMOS power devices in compact, high-efficiency DC-DC power converters for telecom, datacom, switches, routers and other high-end applications. The dual-channel SC2447 can produce two independent outputs of up to 30A each or a single high-current output up to 60A.

A DrMOS replaces a synchronous MOSFET driver IC and a pair of power MOSFETs, offering higher switching frequency and higher efficiency, resulting in better thermal performances and higher system reliability. It is the next-generation power technology for high-current power converters.

The SC2447 incorporates soft-start/enable pins for each output and 180-degree out-of-phase operation that minimizes the input current ripple and enables the use of smaller input filter capacitors which reduce the size and cost of the total design.

The device can be started into a pre-biasing output. It also features hiccup overload protection, which protects the converter from overload damage and automatically returns to normal operation when overload condition is removed.

The SC2447 is provided in a 28-lead TSSOP package that is lead-free and meets RoHS and WEEE environmental standards.
