Semtech Debuts Industry's First Dual-Channel Step-Down Controller for DrMOS Power Devices

CAMARILLO, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—February 26, 2007— Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices, computers and industrial equipment, today announced the SC2447, the industry's first DC-DC step-down (buck) controller for DrMOS power devices.

The SC2447 is a 1MHz synchronous PWM buck controller designed to drive DrMOS power devices in compact, high-efficiency DC-DC power converters for telecom, datacom, switches, routers and other high-end applications. The dual-channel SC2447 can produce two independent outputs of up to 30A each or a single high-current output up to 60A.

A DrMOS replaces a synchronous MOSFET driver IC and a pair of power MOSFETs, offering higher switching frequency and higher efficiency, resulting in better thermal performances and higher system reliability. It is the next-generation power technology for high-current power converters.

"The use of DrMOS promises to make it much easier for a design engineer to build power converters that meet today's stringent demands for efficiency and fast and flexible designs," said Liu Yang, Director of Marketing for Semtech's Power Management Telecom Division. "The dual power output and high switching frequency of the SC2447 make it ideally suited for the compact and leading-edge power converter designs that leverage DrMOS technology."

The SC2447 incorporates soft-start/enable pins for each output and 180-degree out-of-phase operation that minimizes the input current ripple and enables the use of smaller input filter capacitors which reduce the size and cost of the total design.

The device can be started into a pre-biasing output. It also features hiccup overload protection, which protects the converter from overload damage and automatically returns to normal operation when overload condition is removed.

The SC2447 is provided in a 28-lead TSSOP package that is lead-free and meets RoHS and WEEE environmental standards.

Key Features of the SC2447

-- Input voltage 4.65V to 15V

-- Dual outputs of up to 30A each or a single high-power output of up to 60A

-- Up to 1MHz switching frequency with DrMOS solution reduces size of the external components and overall cost of the solution

-- Hiccup overload protection, which protects the converter from overload damage and automatically returns to normal operation when overload condition is removed

-- Dual phase output is 180 degrees out-of-phase for low input current ripple requiring smaller input capacitors

Pricing and Availability

The SC2447 is available immediately in production quantities and is priced at $1.95 each in 1,000-piece lots. Ordering code for the devices is SC2447TSTRT, and for the evaluation board is SC2447EVB. Semtech offers comprehensive design assistance, including field- and factory-based support. Data sheets, volume pricing and delivery quotes, as well as evaluation kits and samples, are available by contacting salesinfo@semtech.com.
