W&W Communications Introduces a Multi-Channel H.264 Encoder for Video Surveillance Applications

The Multi Channel H.264 Encoder Simultaneously Encodes Up to 16 Channels

LAS VEGAS, April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- At America's largest security event, ISC WEST, W&W Communications (WWComs) announced an H.264-based video surveillance encoding solution implemented in Altera FPGAs. WWComs developed the H.264ENC for the video surveillance market where multi-channel H.264 implementations can dramatically reduce storage costs and improve video quality. The H.264ENC is capable of switching from 16 CIF (352x288) channels to 4 simultaneous D1 (720x480) channels, or up to one high definition (1280x720) channel. This is a user-defined option of the H.264ENC available through WWComs innovative architectural design.

"By capturing the superior performance and flexibility of Altera's FPGA technology, WWComs has developed a video surveillance solution that delivers unmatched H.264 video encoding efficiency," said Dr. Farhad Mighani, VP of Hardware Engineering at WWComs.

The H.264ENC is the most efficient and flexible implementation for multi-channel H.264 encoding available today. WWComs has a critical match in a world-class hardware design team combined with H.264 algorithms that have been commercially tested and refined over the last three years in DSPs. "Perfecting the H.264ENC in software first allowed WWComs to develop the most efficient designs in critical modules such as the motion estimation and motion compensation before committing to Altera FPGA technology," added Mighani.

"WWComs' migration of their innovative baseline H.264 encoding technology from DSP supports the flexibility and performance demands of the video surveillance market. Leveraging Altera unique FPGA technology enabled WWComs to quickly and efficiently meet these demands," said Todd Scott, Sr. Director of the Broadcast and Consumer Business Unit at Altera Corporation.

The H.264ENC is demonstrable in a single Altera FPGA today. SystemC models are also available for evaluation. The H.264ENC provides customers with a PCI development platform and a fully supported Linux software developer kit. A real-time demonstration will be shown during the ISC WEST show at the Sand's Expo and convention center, booth number 13098.
