World's First, True High-Definition Video Filter Amplifiers From Maxim

SUNNYVALE, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Dec. 6, 2005— Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX9500/MAX9501, the world's first true high-definition video filter amplifiers and the latest addition the Company's portfolio of video filters and amplifiers. These are the only true high-definition (HD) filter amplifiers because they have greater than 40dB attenuation at 44.25MHz, which is a requirement for all HD signals sampled at 74.25MHz. Perfect for filtering and buffering HD video signals, the MAX9500/MAX9501 can be used as a reconstruction filter for HD video outputs of set-top boxes, DVD-recorders, DVD players, and satellite/cable receivers. The devices can also be used as an anti-aliasing filter for analog inputs of high-definition televisions (HDTV).

Unique Filter Amplifier Capabilities

1. Attenuate Undesired Aliases Starting at 44.25MHz

Most MPEG decoders in set-top boxes, DVD players, and AV receivers reconstruct HD video at 74.25MHz. Because, however, HD video signals have a 30MHz bandwidth, there will be a significant alias beginning at 44.25MHz. Therefore, customers need a filter that will pass the baseband video up to 30MHz, but fully attenuate the alias beginning at 44.25MHz. Existing HD filters cannot deliver this needed 30MHz, but instead provide only 15dB attenuation at 44.25MHz (see Figure 1), which allows the unwanted aliases to degrade the video quality.

The MAX9500/MAX9501 provide a 30MHz passband and 50dB attenuation at 44.25MHz to completely suppress aliases for optimal video quality.

2. Drive Two Loads from a Single Set of Outputs

The MAX9500/MAX9501 can drive two loads simultaneously for set-top box customers that have two sets of HD component (Y/Pr/Pb) outputs. Typical ICs only drive one set of outputs which forces customers with two sets of outputs, to TV and recorder for example, to purchase two sets of drivers. The MAX9500/MAX9501 allow customers to drive both loads with the same driver without any degradation of performance. This capability will save both the cost and added space of the additional driver circuitry.

3. Available in Both Single-Supply and Dual-Supply Versions

The MAX9500 operates with a single +5V supply for customers that do not have negative a supply rail in their systems. These customers can choose to AC-couple or DC-couple the outputs with a positive DC bias for a very simple solution.

The MAX9501 operates with dual +/-5V supplies. This is ideal for customers who already have +/- supplies in their system and do not want to AC-couple the outputs. Most competitors have only single-supply amplifiers so their customers must use a large output capacitor to center the signal around ground. This large coupling capacitor is both expensive and can degrade video quality. Because the MAX9501 operates off +/-5V, the video signal can be centered around ground without any capacitive coupling.
