Texas Instruments Introduces New Radio Frequency Synthesizer for Wireless Infrastructure Applications

First Fully Integrated Chip Supports Extended Frequency Range

BEIJING, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE: TXN) (TI) today announced its new high performance radio frequency (RF) synthesizer that maintains signal integrity for wireless infrastructure applications. The highly-integrated TRF3761 RF synthesizer requires one-third of the board footprint compared to other modules, addressing manufacturer's growing demand for smaller, more cost-efficient base station solutions. (For more information, see http://www.ti.com/trf .)

RF synthesizers are typically used as the local oscillator (LO) for RF devices such as mixers or quadrature modulators that enable transmission or reception at those particular frequencies. In the past, base station manufacturers used customized modules that integrated phase locked loop (PLL) devices with voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs), buffers and passive circuitry. The TRF3761 eliminates the need for these modules by integrating their equivalent functionality into a single 6x6mm two chip that delivers performance equal to more expensive and larger modules.

"Our new RF product addresses base station manufacturers' needs for high- integration to reduce board size, allowing our customers to design smaller base stations that provide enhanced features," said Nicolas Salamina, RF infrastructure product line manager at TI. "TI's newest RF synthesizer eases manufacturability and delivers a more reliable system because of its small size and monolithic silicon solution."

The TRF3761 is available at an extended frequency range of 400 MHz to 2.5 GHz and supports various 3G wireless standards as well as 2G and 2.5G, while delivering infrastructure-class phase noise performance. For example, at an output frequency of 1.9GHz, the TRF3761 delivers -138dBc/Hz phase noise when measured at a 600kHz offset, and noise floor of -160dBc/Hz when measured at a 10MHz offset. When operating at an output frequency of 900MHz, the TRF3761 yields phase noise of -144dBc/Hz when measured at a 600kHz offset, and -160dBc when measured at a 10MHz offset.

The device continues to build on TI's RF portfolio for infrastructure applications such as quadrature modulators, the TRF3701/2 and synthesizers with the TRF3750. TI also provides state-of-the-art signal chain solutions with high-speed amplifiers (THS4509, OPA847), high-speed digital-to-analog converters (DAC5687), digital up/down converters (GC5016), crest factor reduction processors (GC1115) and high speed analog-to-digital converters (ADS5545).

For developers evaluating and designing with the TRF3761, TI provides an evaluation module (EVM), software package and documentation for easy testing. Samples of the TRF3761 and the EVM are available today.
