"This new line of high performance power modules allows us to significantly expand the market opportunity for our products," stated Dave Bell, President of Linear Technology. "By leveraging Linear's deep expertise in power management, we are providing our customers with an efficient, proven power solution that gets their systems to market fast."
The LTM4600 micro-module serves a broad range of applications in markets that include industrial, medical, instrumentation, avionics, computers, communications and networking. Specific products that can leverage the LTM4600's performance include network routers, blade servers, cellular basestations, data storage systems, and medical diagnostic equipment.
According to Don Paulus, Vice President and General Manager of Linear Technology's Power Management Products, "System designers today are challenged to develop systems that achieve ever-higher power densities with relentless time to market pressure. With power supplies becoming more complex, designers increasingly require sophisticated power design expertise. Using Linear Technology's LTM4600 micro-module, the power design is virtually done, freeing system designers to focus on their core expertise."
Linear's new power micro-modules are complete switchmode power supplies, delivered in compact, low profile molded packages that can be handled and conveniently surface mounted like a standard integrated circuit. They can be placed on either side of the printed circuit board to conserve valuable board space. The LTM4600 micro-module is compatible with input voltages up to 28 Volts, while providing the industry's highest power density, sourcing up to 10 Amps continuous output current at voltages ranging from 5 Volts to 0.6 Volts. Two such devices can be operated in parallel to increase the current capability to 20 Amps.
Linear Technology has developed technology internally over the past several years to enable entry to this new market. The new micro-module line leverages the company's leadership position in power management technology, as the new modules incorporate Linear Technology power management ICs. In addition, the company has developed proprietary power MOSFET technology that enables new levels of performance and power density. These products have been designed to bring component level reliability to sophisticated power systems.
Linear is already sampling customers with the new power micro-modules, and will accept volume orders this quarter.
Dave Bell continued, "This product is just the first entry in a growing family of module products from Linear Technology. We are committed to rapidly growing the product line. Initial feedback from about 100 customers who have evaluated the product is very encouraging, and design activity is accelerating."
Linear Technology's integrated circuits provide an essential bridge between our analog world and the digital microelectronics used pervasively in a broad range of industrial, computer and communications systems. The company has developed a leading position in high performance power management semiconductors. Linear produces a broad range of high precision analog circuits with applications in automotive, computer, communications, digital consumer, industrial, medical instrumentation, military and space systems, security, and wireless systems.
