National Semiconductor Introduces 3 Giga-sample ADC

ADC08D1500 and Two Additional ADCs Join Gigahertz-range Family for Unmatched Performance in Test and Measurement, Communications Applications

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: NSM) today expanded its popular family of gigahertz-speed analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with the introduction of three new converters that offer the industry's best performance with ultra-low power consumption.

The new products are the ADC08D1500, a dual 8-bit converter capable of sampling one analog input at 3 giga-samples per second (GSPS) when operating in dual-edge sampling (DES) mode or two inputs at 1.5 GSPS; the ADC08D500, a dual, 500 mega-samples per second (MSPS) 8-bit converter; and the ADC081500, a single version of the ADC08D1500. These ADCs join the ADC08D1000 and ADC081000, ultra-low-power gigahertz-speed ADCs introduced last year.

Today, National is raising the bar with the first 8-bit ADC capable of sampling signals at 3 GSPS while consuming a mere 1.9W. The new ADCs' low power consumption of less than 2W enables engineers to design without fans and heat sinks, saving board space, reducing system cost and enhancing system reliability. The ADC08D1500 typically achieves 7.2 effective number of bits (ENOB), 45.5 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and 53.4 dB spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) at 3 GSPS with a 750 MHz input signal. The products guarantee no missing codes over the full operating temperature range of -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C. The ultra-high-speed 8-bit family is well-suited for test and measurement equipment such as digital oscilloscopes, digital capture cards, spectrum analyzers and communications transceiver applications.

About the ADC08D500/1500/D1500

The ADC08D500 and ADC08D1500 join National's ADC08D1000, a dual gigahertz- speed ADC that outperforms other competitive solutions while consuming significantly less power. Like the ADC08D1000, the ADC08D1500 and ADC08D500 digitize two input signals to 8-bit resolution at sampling rates of 1.5 GSPS and 500 MSPS, respectively, while consuming just 1.9W and 1.4W from a 1.9V nominal supply. In DES mode, the ADC08D1500 achieves sampling speeds up to 3 GSPS from one channel by interleaving the two on-chip converters. Both coarse and fine timing adjustments are available, allowing the sampling clock for each channel to be calibrated independently in 0.1 pico-second increments. A three-wire serial bus controls these adjustments, as well as on-chip functionality, and independent gain and offset fine-tuning for I and Q channels. The ADC081500 is a single version of the dual ADC08D1500.
