Acer and Cadence Announce Strategic Alliance to Cultivate World-Class Talents in Analog IC Design

TAIPEI, Taiwan and SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 26, 2002--Acer Foundation and Cadence Design Systems, Inc. have announced a strategic alliance in Taiwan to cultivate world-class talents in analog and mixed-signal circuit designs, with an emphasis on system-on-a-chip (SoC) designs. At the same time, Acer has announced the inauguration of Aspire IC Design Institute, a key unit within the Aspire Research Complex located in Taiwan. The institute will focus on IC designs for wireless and networking communications.

Acer Foundation is a non-profit organization backed by Acer Inc., a worldwide top 10 PC vendor. The mission of the foundation is to assist industries in building up each of their core competencies. Cadence (NYSE: CDN) is the world's largest supplier of electronic design technologies and services. Both companies share the common vision of cultivating Taiwanese talents in analog and mixed-signal circuit design. Cadence will provide experienced trainers to conduct classes, and field application engineers to assist the students, as well as provide teaching materials.

"The Asia Pacific and Greater China economies are steadily growing, and will play increasingly important global roles," said Ray Bingham, president and CEO, Cadence Design Systems. "Cadence has contributed significantly since 1988 to the Taiwan design community to help enhance the quality and quantity of design talents and we will continue to invest in this region."

Stan Shih, chairman and CEO, Acer Inc. said, "Acer has always played a principal role in the advancement of IT -- not just in Taiwan, but throughout Asia Pacific. On the other hand, Taiwan has always occupied the leading position in IC designs worldwide, but also needs to strengthen its knowledge in the analog field. Our cooperation with Cadence will play an essential part toward realizing this need. Our investment will reap high returns to the IT industry once the talents put their newly acquired knowledge and skills to practice."

Home to numerous outstanding IC enterprises, Taiwan understands that the value inherent in IC designs is changing rapidly. Formerly, chipset capacity determined value. Today, the value lies in system specification. And, as these systems become smaller, they demand more sophisticated analog and mixed-signal designs.

"Investing in Taiwan's analog IC design talents is an important step for Cadence," said Matthew C. Chan, president, Cadence Design Systems, Asia Pacific. "We expect excellent yields from training the talents who can then make contributions back to the IT industry."

Shih added, "Educating and learning about the analog and mixed-signal circuit designs are the toughest challenges experienced by the IC design industry here in Taiwan. With the golden opportunity to cooperate with a top company like Cadence, Acer will be the first in Taiwan to actively promote this learning, continuing our commitment to play the major role in transforming Taiwan into a renowned center for the creation of IT products."

Classes will begin in January 2003, with the capacity to take 30 students for each three-month term. Acer and Cadence aim to train at least 100 students annually. In the first quarter of 2003, a second set of classes focusing on system level design will begin, also aiming to train 100 students annually. Acer and Cadence have initially signed a five-year agreement.
