SEMICON West 2006 to Feature Special Focus on Emerging Technologies and Market Opportunities

Special Exhibit Area Focused on Enabling Technologies and Emerging Market Opportunities at SEMICON West 2006 July 11-13

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- SEMI today announced additional details for its upcoming Emerging Technologies TechXPOT (ETX), located in West Hall Level 3 of the Moscone Center during SEMICON West 2006, July 11-13 in San Francisco. Focusing on enabling technologies and emerging market opportunities in nanotechnology, MEMS and energy, the ETX will feature exhibits and presentations from innovative companies, presentations from select winners of the fourth annual Technology Innovation Showcase (TIS), automotive fuel cell displays and a raceway using MEMS-enabled Segway Human Transporters.

SEMI is partnering with the MEMS Industry Group (MIG), California Fuel Cell Partnership (CFCP), U.S. Fuel Cell Council (USFCC), the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and the Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA) on the ETX.

"Companies face many challenges when bringing innovative technologies to market, no matter how ground-breaking those technologies might be," said Skip Rung, president and executive director at Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI) and co-chair of the TIS committee. "The ETX not only provides an opportunity to showcase those innovations, but also offers companies a commercial forum to discuss technical requirements, emerging market trends, identify potential business partners and generate targeted sales leads."

ETX sessions will cover: Fuel Cell and Battery Markets and Technologies, featuring John Goodman, CTO of Entegris and President of the USFCC; Solar Markets, Technologies and Regulations, featuring Rhone Resch, president of SEIA; Nano Materials and Manufacturing Technologies, featuring Mike Garner, manager, external materials research, Intel Corporation; Nano Metrology; MEMS Markets and Applications, featuring Jean-Christophe Eloy, managing director and founder of Yole Developpement; as well as MEMS Process Technologies. All of this live content is provided for no additional charge to attendees of SEMICON West.

The ETX will house TIS winners from emerging technology markets. The TIS will be categorized in conjunction with the TechXPOTs, and will highlight key technology areas including: wafer processing; assembly/packaging and test; electronic design automation (EDA) and e-manufacturing and emerging technologies. This format is designed to compliment the increased emphasis on technology segmentation at SEMICON West 2006.

2006 TIS winners in nanotechnology include ALIS Technology, Ascend Instruments, Cambrios Technologies Corporation, Metryx Ltd., NanoDynamics and Pixelligent Technologies LLC. MEMS winners include Akustica, Inc., Applied MicroStructures, Inc., Lam Research Corporation, and Memsstar(TM) Technology.

"We recognize the importance that emerging technologies and markets have to the overall semiconductor industry, which is why we are taking this holistic approach to the ETX," said Lubab Sheet, senior director of emerging technologies at SEMI. "We are leveraging the SEMICON platform to help bring companies currently developing new technologies in MEMS, nanotechnology and energy into the fold of the industry at large, to increase awareness and highlight synergies and opportunities to help speed commercialization and market growth in these areas."

The ETX will also feature displays showcasing fuel cell vehicles from Toyota and Ford, as well as a raceway using MEMS-enabled Segway Human Transporters. In addition, SEMI will be sponsoring a Segway giveaway at the Emerging Technologies Reception on Wednesday July 12.
