HP Introduces Dual-core Servers that Can Enhance Application Performance by up to 75 Percent; New Four-Processor HP ProLiant Servers Powered by Industry's First x86 Dual-Core Processors

PALO ALTO, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—April 21, 2005— HP (NYSE: HPQ)(Nasdaq: HPQ) today introduced new additions to its server lineup powered by the industry's first x86 dual-core processors, which can boost certain enterprise application performance by nearly 75 percent.(1)

Using AMD's new Dual-Core AMD Opteron(TM) processor, the new server blade -- the HP ProLiant BL45p for the HP BladeSystem -- and the dual-core HP ProLiant DL585 redefine four-processor performance and price-to-performance ratios with benchmarks that continue HP's leadership across a broad set of applications.(2)

As the No. 1 vendor of industry-standard x86 servers worldwide and the leading provider of AMD Opteron processor-based server systems,(3) HP is positioned to drive the adoption of dual-core technology.

HP additionally plans to release the HP ProLiant BL25p, BL35p and DL385 and the HP xw9300 Workstation with dual-core technologies in mid-2005, when AMD delivers its Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor 200 Series. The HP xw9300 Workstation currently has performance and feature advantages with the NVIDIA nForce Professional chipset and memory architecture design that surpass other AMD Opteron processor-based workstations.

Benchmarks show significant performance gains

Dual-core-based HP ProLiant servers can substantially increase the performance of business-critical applications such as database, enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, mail and messaging, virtual machines and terminal services, without adding systems costs.

For example, in a recent four-processor, two-tier SAP(R) Sales and Distribution (SD) Standard Application Benchmark, results of which were released today, the dual-core HP ProLiant DL585 supported 1,772 SAP SD Benchmark users and fully processed 178,000 order line items per hour. The server supported 755 more users and 76,000 more order line items per hour than the single-core DL585 did in a previous two-tier SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark, equaling a nearly 75 percent performance improvement.(1)

During the same four-processor, two-tier SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark, the HP ProLiant BL45p supported 1,716 users and fully processed 172,000 order line items per hour. Highlighting the outstanding performance delivered by the HP ProLiant BL45p and DL585, this benchmark positions these servers as the No. 1 and 2 performers in the four-processor, two-tier SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark.(1)

In online transaction processing, the HP ProLiant DL585 delivers unmatched performance with a record-breaking TPC-C benchmark of 187,296 tpmC @ $2.04/tpmC. This result is 25 percent faster and less than half the price of the next four-processor x86 server.(2)

HP's AMD Opteron processor-based products are created with the customer in mind to include the reliability, ease of ownership and optimized system performance for which HP ProLiant servers are known. Providing a scalable foundation for customers of all sizes, HP's dual-core-based servers announced today include:

-- HP ProLiant BL45p for HP BladeSystem -- The BL45p is the first AMD Opteron processor 800 Series-based server blade from a tier one vendor to deliver industry-leading four-processor blade performance and is offered with both dual-core and single-core processors. The BL45p delivers customers more compute power and alleviates rack and power constraints commonly faced in today's enterprise data center. The BL45p leverages existing HP BladeSystem infrastructure and enclosures while delivering much higher blade density, which can reduce operational costs and protect customer investment. -- HP ProLiant DL585 -- The DL585 now supports the new Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor 800 Series, further increasing the performance leadership of this system. In addition, HP plans to launch lower bin dual-core models at the same price as current bin single-core models -- delivering an increase in performance without an increase in server price.

Management and consolidation solutions with dual-core

Using the new HP ProLiant dual-core-based servers with HP management tools provides easier consolidation and virtualization solutions for customers. This is delivered through:

-- HP's Virtual Machine Manager solution, which provides the only unified management capability of virtual and physical resources, as well as both Microsoft(R) and VMware virtual machines.

-- Dual-Core AMD Opteron processing power in the HP ProLiant BL45p will allow multi-tiered applications to be consolidated within a single blade enclosure, delivering complete business solutions with up to four servers and 16 processors.

-- HP Performance Management Pack, which provides recommendations for solving performance issues and maximizing the benefits of dual-core technology.

Pricing and availability

To deliver the best possible solution for customers, HP plans to launch specific dual-core HP ProLiant BL45p and DL585 servers at the same price as existing single-core-based servers. Customers can order the HP ProLiant BL45p and HP ProLiant DL585 single-core-based server models today and dual-core-based server models are expected to be available within 30 days. The HP BL45p single-core-based server starts at $6,999 and the DL585 single-core-based server starts at $9,999.(4)
